1954 ASTON MARTIN DB2-4 For Sale
Chassis no. LML/ 749
Engine no. V136J189
The Aston-Martin DB2 appealed to only a limited market because it had just two seats and a very small boot compartment. Aston Martin response to these shortcomings in October 1953 with the launch of the DB2/ 4 which had two occasional seats in the back which folded forward to create a very useful luggage area. The roof-line was also raised and a larger rear window incorporated into a lifting tailgate to create what was effectively the world's first hatchback.
The new model incorporate features like all aluminium body, a telescopic steering column and adjustable backrests. Brakes were large and powerful drums all round.
Powered by a 2, 580cc version of the famous Willie Watson / WO Bentley designed DOHC straight-six engine producing 107bhp, the DB2/ 4 2. 6-litre was capable of 0-60mph in 10 seconds on its way to a top speed of 115mph.
DB2s finished first, second and third in class at the 1951 Le Mans 24 Hours, and third overall against Jaguar’s iconic C-Type. Three works-prepared DB2/ 4s took the Team Prize in the 1955 Monte Carlo Rally, with one of them just missing outright victory due to a navigation error. The magazine Motor stated that: "The DB2/ 4 can truthfully claim to be the fastest car in the world capable of carrying two people with a month's luggage." DB2/ 4 production had amounted to 565 cars by the time the MkII was introduced in October 1955.
This Aston-Martin was dispatched from the factory in June 1954 when it was supplied by E. H. Organ and Sons Limited to its first owner, WM Eden & Co of Birmingham.
The second owner was Mr. Stuart Robbens from Tonbridge, Kent. He bought the car in 1969. Mr Robbens kept the DB2/ 4 for 18 years and maintained it to a high level.
In 1987, the car was sold to its last owner, a gentleman from Northern Italy who has recently undergone a full nut and bolt restoration.
Finished in blue haze with grey-piped blue trim, grey headlining and blue carpets, this Aston-Martin still retained its original engine according to the information on the Heritage Certificate coming with the car.
This superbly restored car will be a splendid addition to a discerning collection, a rare opportunity to acquire an iconic sports car from the 50's.
