There’s nothing quite like an early 70s MGB GT, is there? The perfect mix between 60s sportscar design and the refinements of the later cars. These cars are a fantastic investment, with prices dramatically rising all of the time. This car is no exception, and I feel you’ll struggle to find a better one in this sort of price range. It’s had a great deal of work during its life, which I will detail throughout the ad. MOT until March 2018, and the past five MOTs, since the restoration, have had no advisories.

The car was subject to a full restoration around 5,000 miles ago, which included the following:

·    Full bodywork and structural restoration, which included a full respray.
·    New front and rear bumpers and over-riders
·    New seat covers, dashboard repaint and new carpet set
·    An engine rebuild (machining work done by Cleasbys of Durham)
·    New clutch, thrust bearing and hydraulics
·    Unleaded head conversion
·    New wheels and tyres
·    12v battery conversion, battery now located in the engine bay.
·    New rear springs and shocks
·    Brakes rebuilt
·    …and much more!

The car has been used as a reliable and regular car for local use. It’s not a show car, but does present nicely, as you can see from the pictures. If you’re looking for a car to use and enjoy, that you’re not afraid to use, then this is probably the one for you!

The car fires up beautifully idles healthily. It pulls strongly and sounds great. I drove the car 160 miles back from Durham with no issues – the car doesn’t appear to use any oil or water. Oil pressure is spot-on, and the car does not overheat. The overdrive gearbox is nice and tight and does not jump out of gear. The rear axle is nice and quiet, with no clunks or whines.

Bodily, the car presents nicely. It was repainted a few years ago and has a good shine. Of course, as it’s a few years now since the car was painted, there are a few little imperfections – for example, a couple of bits of blistering here and there, which you should be able to see in the pictures - but nothing to worry about at all. It’s not a concourse car! The chromework is excellent and has been replaced recently – front grille included. New Minilite type wheels have recently been fitted, along with new tyres all round. The car appears to be nice solid underneath – again, no advisories on any of the tests since the full restoration.

The interior is a nice place to be. The car had new seat covers, carpets, etc, so it’s in good all-round condition. The door cards are the originals, so aren’t like new, but they’re not bad at all.

The engine bay is very clean and tidy (and body colour), and could be detailed to make it even nicer. The engine has been painted in BMC green and looks brilliant. K&N air filters have been fitted, along with an alloy rocker cover. Twin air horns are fitted – people can certainly hear you coming!

There’s quite a bit of old paperwork with the car, including photographs of the rebuild. There are also a couple of boxes full of spares which the new owner is welcome to take. There’s even a full litre of red paint to match the car, so there’s plenty left for anything needing doing in years to come.

As stated, it’s not a concourse bare-metalled show winner, but it’s a good, serviceable car that hasn’t been ‘tarted up’ too much throughout its life.
