This car was initially recommissioned as a show car in 2013 and won second price in the Festival of Motoring for Best Saloon from 1980 Onwards.
It was originally a maroon red 1000cc automatic saloon, we used some of the original parts (not many) but the brief at the time was to build a fun Mini as quickly as we could whilst keeping our quality standards and attention to detail. The body work was completed in less than a month with new wings, A panels, scuttle repair panels and a full respray, The rebuild itself was completed in less than a week; we have the photo evidence to go with the car if required.
We sourced a gearbox, a 1275cc MG Metro Engine, together with a set of twin 1 ¼ SU carbs, three into one exhaust manifold, and a bigger bore exhaust system and set about rebuilding and refining it (since the rebuild it has only done 250 miles or so). The engine itself was stripped, fully inspected, and cleaned. The bores were de-glazed, the pistons cleaned, and new rings fitted and gapped. The bottom end was reground and new bearings fitted together with a new oil pump and water pump. The gearbox was an MG Metro but has been rebuilt with a straight cut gear cluster (new) together with new bearings and baulk rings, and was rebuilt at the same time as the engine. The engine is fitted with a fast road camshaft, lightened flywheel, and a new clutch. We were going to set this up with a programmable ignition system but if the new owner wanted to squeeze a bit more power out of the engine this could be a very good opportunity. The cylinder head is a standard MG head and although it and all the valves have been cleaned and lapped in it could do with porting to allow for improved performance.
A new subframe was sourced to allow for the engine and gearbox change and was fitted with shot blasted and powder coated top arms (new bearings and shafts were fitted). The suspension rubber donuts were removed and coilover springs and dampers fitted, the lower arms are negative camber and adjustable tie rods. The front hubs are new along with new brake discs, calipers, and brake pads. The steering rack was reconditioned and refitted.
We modified the rear suspension; the rear radius arms were sent away for shot blasting and powder coating, new bearings and shafts fitted and mounted onto a single rear beam, which has been subsequently widened and both camber and track adjustment added. Again, the rear suspension was converted to coilover springs and dampers. New rear brakes have been fitted to shotblasted and powder coated back plates, the handbrake has been modified and improved and runs on an inner and outer cable so there are no more quadrants to worry about.
Road wheels and tyres are 13x7” J rims fitted together with Sports Arches. The rear wheels have an additional 25mm spacer fitted between the drum and the wheels.
The interior is somewhat minimalistic, but has been fitted with bucket seats, four point belts, and two sets of orange ear defenders (you do need them).
The colour scheme was intended to be eye catching and I think the white and orange look does just that. The fuel tank, some of the suspension components, the roll cage, the engine, and the wheels are all orange, please see the pictures for more detail.

The car mostly lives in Birmingham but has done a number of shows, fun days, Cov Motofest, Coventry Transport Museum breakfast club. However, it just isn’t being used so it’s time for someone else to have some fun with it.
