This is a car I know very well indeed, having bought if from the couple who bought it brand new, from Mount Garages, Mercedes in Hudderfield, back in March 1989. I've sold it three times in the ensuing years, and without exception, every owner has later admitted they've regretted selling it. What's also surprising is that it hasn't deteriorated since I first clapped eyes on it, eight years ago, on the first owner's drive, back in 2009, which is direct result of the level of maintenance this car has enjoyed, throughout its life.
I'd say this is probably one of the best and most original examples available, and it's also one of the best driving 230E's I've experienced; it's so serene and quiet, putting many more modern cars to shame. These early W124's are now becoming very sought after, as it's now widely accepted, and something I've been saying for quite some time, that their build quality is far, far superior to the face lifted (made 1993 on) W124's, and as time progresses that fact is becoming ever more clear. I've always said Mercedes-Benz's golden years were between 1989-1992, when build quality was at its absolute pinnacle; this car is a lasting testament to that.
This is one of those few cars that I know the complete history of, and one that has etched itself on my memory, for all the right reasons. I always remember when I bought it from the original owners back in 2009, the lady had a tear in her eye, as I drove it away. They'd told me they had worked hard for this car, and it was something they'd aspired to own for some time, and in their twenty year ownership, had meticulously looked after what was their pride and joy. However, they were both advancing in years, and were struggling getting in and out of the 230E, and had bought a taller Mercedes B-Class, which was much easier for them to get in and out of.
As I've said above, I've sold this car three times in the last 8 years, and without exception, every owner, who were all enthusiasts have been sympathetic and have all looked after it, beyond what was required. It's rare this happens with a car, but this is one of those cars that endears itself to you, and makes you feel like you have to look after it. In return it rewards the driver with such a fantastic driving experience. As you can imagine, I've owned and driven more of these cars than most, and it never ceases to amaze me just how good this car is.
Mechanically, as you'd expect of a vehicle that's benefited from this degree of maintenance and care, it absolutely fantastic. I took it for MOT last week, after I'd had it stored for a while, and it went straight through, with no advisory notices whatsoever…how many 28 year old cars could achieve that?. Everything works as it should too, and it also had a head gasket change at around 65,000 miles too, so that's one less worry, and all tyres, including the spare are matching Goodyear Eagle, with excellent tread.
Bodywork is equally impressive, and I'd say that its 95% original too. There's none of the usual corrosion in any of the W124 areas either. The Nautic blue paintwork also has a lovely, deep even shine. These earlier cars really do put the later W124's to shame.
Interior is beautiful, with no wear or damage to the interior evident. This car has also never had an alarm fitted, so all trim is undisturbed, and in beautiful condition. Even the original MB blue ribbed over mats are in superb condition. The original dealer fit Blaupunkt radio is also still present and correct too, however its 28 years now and the display is missing a few pixels, but still works. I've left it in for the sake of originality, but I will, if required change it for either another period unit, or a more subtle modern unit.
So, in summary, if you're looking for one of the better W124's out there, with superb providence and a complete known history, you won't find many better than this car. I've actually kept this gem for almost two years, as I love this car and feel an affinity with it (silly I know, and doesn't make any commercial sense whatsoever), but those sentiments should give you an idea of the quality of this car. I see cars come and go all the time, but I'll be truly sorry to see this one go again.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at http://www.mtsv.co.uk
