THE ALFA GT 1600 JUNIOR
On Thursday 26th October 1972 the story begins.
During the third Thursday of October this exquisite first series, original righthand drive 1600GT Junior rolled off the production line and out onto the open road for the very first time. Its extremely rare, and beautiful, indigo grey paint, the same colour the car retains today, sat proudly on the exterior accentuating the lines of this stunning Italian classic with its black tex interior.
The Alfa Romeo 105 series coupé was allocated to the sunny shores of Cyrpus. The dry climate of the Eastern Mediterranean treated this little Alfa to a perfect start in life, country roads, blue skies above and not a drop of rain around the result of which is an Alfa Romeo that is almost entirely original with only minimal signs of welding. The car remained in the original owner’s hands for just shy of 40 years, before, in 2011, the car was purchased by a second owner and was subject to a sympathetic restoration. As a result, the car benefits from having had a complete respray, along with the interior recovered and headlining replaced, to retain the overall superb quality of the car. The brightwork was replaced and the mechanicals also received an overhaul with the engine receiving new piston rings and big end bearings.
The car remained in Cyprus for two more years until the 16th August 2013, when the 107BHP pocket rocket, headed to the country where the Alfa now resides - England. The car was imported directly into a private collection and all taxes and duties have been paid.
Three years later, the car was sold to its current owner, myself, who has kept the Alfa stored under cover in a garage nestled in the Sussex countryside. As a car that loves to be driven, she is mechanically as sound as they come, she has completed a Sussex to Paris road trip, and back, in one weekend with no mechanical faults whatsoever. Having owned the Alfa for over a year now, the more you drive her, the more you love and appreciate the involved drive she provides alongside the gorgeous Bertone styling. The 105 is considered one of Giorgetto Giugiaro of Bertone greatest ever designs.
The car has recently passed its MOT first time and is MOTd until the 13th August 2018.
On a dry sunny day, there is nothing more enjoyable than taking the cover off of her and heading up to the winding, elevation changing country roads of Goodwood, not far from its home. The car is much admired by whoever sees it. It has garnered the nickname the “friend maker” as every journey in this beautiful car seems to come with the creation of a new friend whether that be chatting to an admirer at the petrol station or simply flashing by a car going the other way.
Reluctantly, the time has come to move to London and, with regret, move this car on to the next person who will cherish her as much as her previous three owners have done.
