Story of the Calessino: The "Calessino" was born in 1948 as one of the many "Ape" motorbike sets, a three-wheeled "Vespa". The name "calessino" comes from the appearance of the first model, consisting of the body of a normal Vespa, to which a sort of two-wheeled sofa was fixed, in a sheet of wood-finished sheet and covered by a semi-circular awning A bellows, which in fact was very similar to a horse-drawn calesse. Piaggio's intention was to build an economic vehicle, designed for short-haul transport, suited to the numerous tourist sites of the peninsula that, after the conflict, were returning to be the destination of foreign tourists, mainly from northern Europe and United States of America.
The model gained immediate success. Cost and maintenance costs and, above all, small dimensions, made it the ideal vehicle to move into the ancient villages of the Tyrrhenian and island seaside resorts, often served by narrow and steep streets.
Even the advent of the popular car at the end of the 1950s did not affect the use of "Calessino", which for the next decade will be the protagonist of the "sweet life" on the Ligurian and Tuscan Riviera as well as on the coast Amalfi, Capri and the Flegrean Islands.
At the end of the 1970s, the production of "Calessino" was resumed in 2007 with a series of 999 specimens, built with the same technical features as the previous model, with the exception of the engine, replaced with a diesel engine. Another substantial difference can be found in the rather demanding purchase price of € 8,590.
On June 25, 2008, two Ape Calessino light-colored and white capote with papal coat-of-arms were delivered to Benedict XVI. On September 16, 2008, the President of the Republic Giorgio Napolitano also received a gift from Ape Calessino with dark blue tops and bodywork, bearing the presidential insignia.
In July 2013, a new version of the series called "Calessino 200" was launched, using as a single-cylinder Piaggio 200 cc fueled petrol, two-seat driver plus, driving 16 years with A1 license and 18 years with normal Auto license B.
The Calessino proposed has been produced in 1953.
