1970 Mercedes 280SL Pagoda RHD For Sale SOLD

Replacing the 4 cylinder 190SL in 1963 the W113 SL models were a leap ahead in technology for Mercedes. All models were equipped with an inline six cylinder engine with mechanical fuel injection, originally this was 2,300cc then for one year only 2,500cc then finally 2,800cc. The bonnet, boot, doors and soft top cover were made of aluminium to reduce weight. The comparatively short and wide chassis, combined with an excellent suspension, powerful brakes and radial tires gave the W113 superb handling for its time. The styling of the front, with its characteristic upright headlights and simple chrome grille, dominated by the large three pointed star, paid homage to the already legendary 300 SL roadster. Also for the first time, power assisted steering and automatic transmissions were both available as factory options making for a great driving pleasure still to this day.

On offer is a late RHD 280SL model fitted with the 4 speed manual transmission and power steering. This is quite rare sight today for a 'Pagoda' built as late as this because by now most customers decided to order the optional automatic gearbox. Built in June 1970 and registered in the UK in October 1970 on the 'J' registration, our car was delivered in DB050 White with contrasting DB040 Black hardtop and hubcaps, a black soft top and interior complete the package.

Showing just 75,510 miles with history back to 1983, this car was sold by H&H auctions in 1999 following it being exhibited in a very large museum collection for 10 years. The
mileage was then recorded at 72,637, since then, the car has been subject to what can only be described as a top quality nut and bolt restoration and has had only limited use since.

The exterior of the car remains near perfect with gleaming paintwork and uniform body shut lines. The correct headlight 'notches' are evident and the front wing spot welds have been carefully replicated. All exterior chrome mouldings, door handles and the original Mercedes fuel cap all gleam and appear as new, the windscreen and door windows are green tinted and scratch free. The new soft top, unusually, operates without drama and fits perfectly with the seals all in great condition. Often neglected, the optional hard top has also been subject to a full restoration with all new chrome and headlining. The glass is the original in good condition and the excellent wood and seals finish the job off splendidly - those of you that have priced this job up in the past would have most possibly decided against it because of the expense!

The Interior also has been sympathetically restored with top quality black leather replacing the original vinyl, the carpets too are very well tailored in the original square weave pile. The wood has been renewed although this is a little darker than original and high gloss. All the interior chrome is in unblemished condition and pleases the eye, as does the period Becker Grand Prix radio.

The underside of the car can only be described as good enough to eat your dinner off. The floor panels and inner wheel arches are all body coloured and in perfect condition with absolutely no corrosion, all the suspension components and brakes have been either replaced or restored and re fitted, the exhaust and fuel tank are also new. If this vehicle were to be used more regularly I would suggest a simple programme of anti rust treatment to keep it in its current condition for years to follow.

Under the bonnet is a similar story, all inner wing panels and the underbonnet are the correct body colour, the engine detailing is good with nice anodized pipework.

On the road the car behaves as good as it looks with the 4 speed manual gearbox changing both up and down with no abnormal noises, the car is powerful, handles well and stops sharply. There is little or no wind noise with the hardtop fitting so well and there are no body creaks obviously due to the quality of the restoration.
Right Hand Drive 280SL's are expensive, they always will be as they are amongst the favourite usable classics of our time. There are companies out there offering newly restored vehicles, often LHD US sourced vehicles, for vast sums of money - this is not one of those cars, it is an older restoration with history that has settled down nicely. It is in a wonderful condition, available now, and offered at a sensible price.

we will add more photos and videos of the car soon, please come back to view!
