1934 MG PA 4 Seater Tourer - 1 of 498 built Beautiful SOLD

With similarities to the Magna and Magnette the P Type 'Midget' was introduced in 1934 as a replacement to the earlier M and J Type cars. Autocar magazine, in November 1934 reported that "This model is a marked improvement in all respects over its forerunners" and further to this sales literature from Morris Garages, Abingdon, claimed, "In all there are over one hundred new and improved features " and with such good reviews there is no suprise the car sold well.

Production of the PA started in January 1934 with the car featuring a newly designed 847cc overhead cam engine (producing 36bhp) fitted with twin 1" SU Carbs, 4 speed 'crash' gearbox, 12" diameter cable operated drum brakes offered improved braking over the J Types 8" units and with 19" x 3.5" wire wheels and Hartford friction dampers fitted to the front and transversely mounted hydraulic spring compensated shock absorbers at the rear the PA provided a comfortable ride over most surfaces. MG PAs where offered from the factory in a number of colour configurations, with the majority of cars being finished in with black then green, red, blue and the duo-tone schemes of Ulster & Dublin Green, Oxford & Cambridge Blue and Carmine & Saratoga Red with interior upholstery being matched to suit.

MG produced 2002 examples of the PA and of these 1835 where built as 2 seaters (some converted to the PA Airline Coupe) and only 498 PAs where built in the rarer 4 seater Tourer configuration. By July '35 production of the PA had finished with MG progressing to the PB model and with some spare chassis available the last 27 PAs were converted to PB specification.

Absolute Classic Cars are privilaged to be able to offer this delightful MG PA 4 seater Tourer. Built in May 1934 and sold to Mr E J Barter Esq, London through University Motors Ltd, London's MG main dealer on the 18th June 1934. At the time of registration University Motor Ltd had purchased a number of 'MG' prefixed registrations and for a small fee the new owner could have a desirable number plate fitted and as such our Carmine & Saratoga Red PA Tourer is photographed showing her valuable 'MG' prefixed plate.

Having been owned and cherished by the same ower for the last 31yrs and with only 3 keepers in the last 84 years this PA Tourer remains a highly original, matching numbers example and as can be seen from our portfolio of pictures she looks stunning with a wonderful patina linked to her older restoration. At the time of collection the car had been unused for a few years (due to the bereavement of her long term owner) and we meticulously set about recommissioning the car, with some of the work including:

Starter motor has been stripped and rebushed where necessary
Fuel system drained, cleaned and fuel pump contacts cleaned
Oil change
All electrics checked (the car has been converted to 12v & negative earth)
Repair of the quaint semiphore indicators
Stripped and adjusted the brake pedal
Wire wheels professionally refurbished and fitted new inner tubes and tyres
Add to this a large number of hours have been lavished in cleaning brightwork, a deep clean of the lovely leather interior and gentle mop of the exterior paint. After this care and attention we couldn't wait to see if the PA would run and with 'choke' pulled out, an adjustment made on the fast/slow idle and the foot operated 'Starter' button depressed our beautiflul MG PA burst into life without a hint of smoke and an unbelieably smooth idle shown on the Jaeger dials.

Stepping into PA the and sitting in the drivers seat one can't help but think of the journeys and stories this car might have had over the last 84yrs. On country lanes the car is a real delight, her 847cc engine has very little weight to carry and so performance is relatively brisk, smooth gear changes can be achieved with the old fashioned double de-clutch technique and despite only having drum brakes these too prove to be upto the task. We've taken the car on a few extended drives and up to 45-50mph and we have complete fallen for the chams of this very special car and she drives incredibly well.

The Triple M Register, created over 50 years ago for all 1928-36 MG Midget / Magna / Magnette cars, indicates 837 PA's on its world-wide register, of the 2002 originally built, but potentially less than 20 road-worthy PA 4 seat Tourers still exsist. Eligible for membership to the VSCC, our wonderful MG PA 4 seater Tourer comes with full wet weather gear (either a fully covered convertible or driver only tonneau.....though we hope she never sees the rain!), a collection of tools (inc wire wheel spanner and her original 'crank-handle), a number of brass plaques / rosettes for meetings attended, collection of MMM magazines dating back to the '60s, specialist MG books / Workshop manuals, a wonderfully comprehensive & detailed history (a box file containing MOTs, receipts, letters of correspondance some back to 1935!), her original buff logbook and current V5 showing her prized MG prefixed registration.
