1948 Lanchester LD10 DHC by ABBOTT. A National Champion For Sale

1948 Lanchester LD10 Drop Head By ABBOTT

Stunning NEC Showcar and DLOC National Champion!

In the world of Classic Cars they don’t come much rarer than this 1948 Lanchester LD10 Drophead Coupe with a special body by E. D. Abbott of Farnham, Surrey, one of only two produced by the firm who specialised in high class body conversions.

The LD10 was designed by Lanchester in 1939 but the production was delayed by the Second World War and only started in 1945, when Edward D Abbott took a couple of chassis, complete with engines, from the Lanchester Works and converted them into Drop Head Coupes made by his coach builders in Farnham. The first was registered in 1947 and this, the second built, was registered in 1948 and was the property of Mrs Margaret Abbott, wife of Edward Abbott the proprietor.

Only two were made and both survive and both are in concours condition (Full details and photos of other car in History File). This car is now in superb condition and ready for a collector or museum to purchase. The car cruises well at 50 MPH on its 1287 cc engine and the pre select gearbox and fluid flywheel work flawlessly having been reconditioned by Tom Dark Engineering, Whitney. The interior is in exceptional condition and it is a pleasure just to sit in the car. The engine compartment is finely detailed to Exhibition Standards. The engine was overhauled by Cotswold Engine Reconditioners and the cyl head by F J Payne & Sons in Whitney who increased the compression ratio and fitted hardened valve seats for use with modern unleaded fuel.

Main Restorer was Ray Heath from South Gloucestershire, well known for preparing Classic Cars to Concours standards. He rebuilt most of the wood frame (giving it very generous coats of Cuprinol and underbody protection) Every single panel was removed from the car and shotblasted back to original metal by Redditch Shotblasting. The finished body was finished in Burgundy over Black to very high standard. Autoglym's Ultra Deep Shine polish was used to obtain the car’s glossy finish. All chrome plating was renewed by Castle polishing of Dudley.

The solid wood door cappings and dashboard were French Polished by Ray Goodall of Cheltenham. The new Hood was made by SW Auto Trimmers in black double duck and fits perfectly.

The car has been exhibited at NEC on numerous occasions and is well known in Club Circles where it is sometimes exhibited with it’s twin Abbot DHC car. It has won many trophies including Best LD10 at the DLOC Club’s National.

To recap, this car has received a 100 point restoration by craftsmen who do not and will not cut corners and the owner was a stickler for detail as evidenced by his superb bound volume “The Story of my Abbott Lanchester” where the complete restoration process has been meticulously recorded along with colour photographs of every stage.

Comes with suitcase full of Historical Documents, including:-
Daimler Fluid Flywheel Instruction Manual
Rare 1972 Daimler Club Magazine
Original Lanchester Owner’s Manual
Restoration Photo Albums
V5C Logbook, Current MOT to May 2018 + lots of old MOT’s
Numerous Press Articles and Road test reports on the car
Bound Volume recording full history of rebuild
