The Series IIA is considered by many the hardiest Series model constructed, having the same main design as the original Series 1, but improved upon in many areas. It is the type of classic Land Rover that features strongly in the general public's perception of the Land Rover, and the same basic shape was carried right through to the most recent Defender, which only last year ceased production after its long 67 year life span.
This is a fully restored example of Land Rover’s true workhorse in the stable; the Diesel Long Wheelbase Pickup finished in ‘Mid Grey’ with Limestone wheels. It is a much rarer Series model, being a 109” version of the later IIAs which were built between 1969 and 1971.
This example has been completely stripped down and restored to what can be described as ‘near factory’ condition, being on the original chassis which has had many new components welded in to an excellent level, and finished off with etch-primer and two-pack black paint. The bulkhead is also believed to be original, restored to an equal standard. The axles were reconditioned with new swivel housings, bearings and seals and the leaf springs were stripped, cleaned and bound to keep them supple for years to come. Body work wise, the vehicle has been finished in a stunning two-pack Welsh Grey (Mid Grey) paint, with no dents or major marks – there is one or two very minor scratches, namely on the top of the right hand wing, but nothing that detracts from the excellent condition of the truck.
The rebuilt ‘two and a quatre’ diesel engine starts readily from cold after a few seconds on the glow plugs, settling into a steady tick over, and is ready and willing on the road cruising happily at 45-50mph… These diesels are not fast but they get the job done economically and reliably in any conditions you can throw at it. All gears select perfectly and the low range and four wheel drive options all work as they should, the hand throttle mounted on the dashboard is operational, and the brakes pull the vehicle up to a stop nice and straight. On road or off it, the vehicle is very capable and versatile.
The interior is excellent; with brand new Exmoor Trim ‘Deluxe’ vinyl seats (a third seat can be added if required), along with floor mats front and rear. Under the passenger seat there is a storage compartment, which contains a correct specification ‘Shelley’ lifting jack, along with a wheel brace, period headlamp fog diffusers plus a tow bar kit if you so wish to bolt it on. The vehicle has a long MoT until 18th September 2018. The odometer reads 55375 however we are unable to verify whether this is correct.
