The 996 model is a superb car; reliable, well-made and quick. With a wide range of models on offer, the most desirable is the Turbo. With four-wheel drive and a 3.6 litre, intercooled engine pushing out 420bhp and hitting 60mph in a whisker over four seconds, this is supercar territory. The earlier models occasionally suffered from an intermittent shaft bearing failure however Porsche rectified this with the Mk. II or X50 and also revised engine control software, a power-upgrade to 450bhp and larger turbochargers. Also included on this second generation model is all-wheel drive transmission, a full six-speed manual gearbox and revised bodywork to allow airflow to three radiators up front and accommodate the 18" wheels and tires.
Performance is ballistic when behind the wheel of a turbo-charged Porsche but with one or two specialist upgrades; the experience is nothing short of epic. Parr, Porsche specialist based in West Sussex, were brought in to set up the car with Bilstein B16 suspension, three-way front and rear anti-roll bars and uprated six-pot callipers, motorsport discs and Pagid brake pads all round. Oz racing wheels and Michelin Pilot Cup Sport 2 tyres were also added all without reference to cost. The service history is good, mainly with Porsche Sheffield, Paragon and, latterly, with Parr. With a fresh service and a full MoT test certificate, this 996 Turbo has had the intelligent upgrades under the skin to enhance the Porsche driving experience; you could call it the next generation of the 996.
