Rudge-Whitworth was a well established bicycle manufacturer that started motorcycle production in 1911, with a 500cc single. In the 1920s their bikes had a lot of success on the track which fuelled the production of factory raced 250cc, 350cc and 500cc machines. This led to them having a very successful works race team, with wins in the TT, Grand Prix and Ulster races. In early 1930, production racers stopped and Rudge concentrated on 250cc and 500cc road bikes, but still used names like the Ulster and TT Special. This Sports Special has been lovingly restored to a very high standard, with many unobtainable parts being reproduced. All the metalwork has been stripped to bare metal, primed and painted to a high standard with correct transfers and gold lining and the removable rear mudguard assembly was re-manufactured by a specialist sheet metalworker to the correct pattern, as the original was beyond repair. Our vendor has taken extreme care throughout, to restore the bike to as near as possible the original specification. The wiring system has been designed to give lights and horn only; there is no charging system, however the correct dynamo is fitted but not driven or connected and a battery is fitted. We understand that this is something strongly recommended by Rudge owners to negate the risk of a broken dynamo drive chain, damaging the difficult-to-replace primary chain case. A fully charged battery will keep the lighting system active for a considerable time as LED bulbs are used. The bike has only covered about four miles since this restoration, so it will need gently running-in. It is sold with a current V5c and some bills supporting work carried out.
