The Land Rover ‘One Ten’ was launched in 1983, and the ‘Ninety’ was launched shortly afterwards in 1984. In 1990, to avoid confusion with the then new ‘Discovery’, the two utility models were renamed ‘Defender’ with ‘110’ and ‘90’ designations respectively which carried on until the end of production in 2016. In 1994, the ‘bullet proof’ 300Tdi was introduced replacing the slightly agricultural, but equally reliable 200Tdi until the all new Td5 came along in 1998.
This particular 90 is a Hard Top model finished in the lovely Rioja Red. This model offers the practicality of a van whilst still being a capable everyday vehicle. It certainly isn’t your typical dirty, neglected example having been well looked after over the years with many new parts and upgrades, including a recent respray to freshen up the paintwork.
The Landy drives nice and tight, and the engine fires up willingly as well as pulling very strongly easily keeping up with modern traffic with plenty of grunt in reserve. The gearbox, high and low gears, difflock and clutch all work perfectly, and the brakes work strongly bringing it up to a stop nice and straight. A brand new radiator has just been fitted so the cooling system is in top shape. The large all terrain tyres all have plenty of tread and are in good condition, suitable for road use and provide an off road capability when the going gets tough.
Underneath, the chassis is completely solid and has had a replacement crossmember fitted by a motor engineer in recent years. We have undersealed it to protect it from the winter grime and salt, so rust is not something to worry about anytime soon. The bulkhead and footwells are excellent with no corrosion present. The body work is straight with excellent paintwork, there is the very odd small chip and light scratch from usage, and a couple of very small areas of ‘bubbling’ paint around the lower wings – only a minor cosmetic issue upon on close inspection.
The interior is great, with Exmoor Trim ‘Diamond XS’ heated seats, cubby box and acoustic matting front and rear making it a comfortable place to be. Everything works as it should, including the audio system (front and rear speakers) and a very good heater (for a Defender!). An attractive auxiliary dash binnacle provides a housing for the JVC audio head unit, plus additional switches for the heated seats, rear wash/wipe, and anything else you may wish to add. Another rocker switch is mounted to the right of the gauge cluster for the front heated screen – perfect for those icey mornings!
The odometer reads 2,814 miles, which is not correct – the reason being that the original speedometer unit failed, which was at around 107,800 miles which is backed up by the MoT history. This means that the vehicle has around 110,600 miles in total. Complementing the vehicle is a folder containing two sets of keys and various old MoTs and receipts for parts and work carried out. There is a brand new hydraulic bottle jack and wheel brace included inside the seat box compartment. The vehicle is MoT’d until 17th May next year.
This Land Rover is ready to be used, enjoyed and put to work on a multitude of tasks, whether it be on the farm, building site, shoot, towing heavy trailers or just as a winter backup vehicle! Additional seating can be fitted in the rear or any other accessories and changes if required, just get in touch!
