Delivered new to Howells of Cardiff on the 1st May 1978 to the first of seven keepers, including me, the car comes with the original service book, radio technical guides and the leather-bound folder is filled with receipts and old MOTs and the last MOT is valid until June 2018. The receipts amount to some £11,000 since 2013, and I have spent some £2,000 since June this year bringing her up to daily driver standard. Rolls-Royces need to be serviced and maintained regularly, which is why I bought this car. There are cheaper Rolls-Royces out there but few have regular maintenance records and decent bodywork which these delightful old girls need. All the electric windows, heating (apart from air con), clock, panel lights, radio and aerial and outside temperature gauge work perfectly. Great reg number WAX 210S and on new “Rolls-Royce Motor Cars of London” plates supplied by Jack Barclay of Mayfair.
Bought by me in June 2017 to be used as a wedding car by a family friend, illness has meant he can’t remain stationary for long and I am therefore offering the next owner a superb wedding car and a daily driver. I drove from South Wales to Hampton Court in her two weeks ago without fault, in fact I have done more than 1,000 miles in her and she sits at 70mph on the motorway comfortably. The speedo was documented as replaced in 1987 at 13,194 miles so the current reading is 48,778 but will go up gradually as I use her virtually every day. Having owned a Shadow I LWB without division for over two years I know a good Rolls-Royce when I see one, and I would class this car as a 7/10. It is not concours, if it was it would be £30,000+.
The chrome is superb, there are no dents or dings to the body although the front and rear screens will need new rubber seals as it lets in some drips. The paint is cracked in a few places on the pillars (common R-R issues), and there are one or two rust scabs but nothing that a winter of cosmetic fettling won’t sort out, especially if kept dry and used in summer weddings. The brake pump is a bit tappetty and will be either replaced at £180 + fitting or factored into price if my Rolls specialist can’t get it done in time. There is a small leak from the power steering reservoir which is a quick fix, again, factored into the price if my Rolls chap can’t get it fixed. I believe in total honesty when selling a car.
The Shadow II drives far better than its predecessor and recent prices have seen them reach £45,000 for 20,000 mile examples. The mileage and history file of this car will always carry a premium, and the money has gone out of Clouds into Shadows so they’re an appreciation asset.
