1975 MG Midget - 6K Miles since Extensive Restoration SOLD

Are you tired of spending excessive time and money viewing MG Midgets described as ‘excellent’ only to find significant rust / clonky suspension / vague handling / smokey engines etc. etc. ??

If Yes, then please carefully read this advert.

Due to a change of circumstances (new Job / Relocation) it’s time to sell my comprehensively restored 1975 MG Midget 1500, in what must be one of the best Midget colour combinations of Brooklands Green with Tan Interior and Black Hood.

The Chassis Number indicates that this Midget was manufactured in June 1975 and registered on 11th August 1975, hence the ‘P’ registration suffix.

It’s an original ‘Rubber Bumper’ UK RHD Model, GAN-6 Chassis Number prefix, 4 Cylinder 1491cc and circa 65 BHP ‘MG/ Triumph’ engine, Twin SU HS4 Carburettors plus 4 Speed Manual Gearbox.

MOT until 6th April 2018 with ‘No Advisories’ and ‘Free Tax’ as this car is over 40 Years Old and is now registered as a ‘Historic Vehicle’. Specialist Limited Mileage (3, 000 p. a.) Insurance can be had for circa £75 p. a. Also, my understanding is that, as of May 2018, this vehicle will be exempt from requiring an MOT (see DVLA Website) due to its ‘Historic Vehicle’ Status.

This car was the subject of a 2 Year Quality and Extensive Restoration circa 1993-1995 by the previous owner and his son. It was Completely Stripped to ‘Bare Metal’ and Comprehensively Restored over this period. Photos are available of the restoration key stages.

Odometer reads circa 89, 800 (believed genuine but not warranted) miles, but more importantly it has only travelled approx. 5, 000-6, 000 miles since restoration completion (DVLA online MOT’s available from 2006 to 2017 showing an average of circa 250-300 miles per year !!!).

There is a significant amount of paperwork / receipts to substantiate the restoration, the list of work is almost endless, but in summary :

• Engine / Gearbox / Back Axle out Body Rebuild - including new Inner and Outer Sills + new Rear Bulkhead + new Transmission Tunnel + new Undertray + new Front and Rear Drivers and Front and Rear Passengers Floors + both Doors + Front and Rear Valances + various other ‘small’ panels were replaced. Repaint in Brooklands Green includes Engine Bay, inside Boot and Interior areas including inner Floors plus body sealing & regular Waxoyling.

• Rebuilt MG (Triumph) 1491cc Engine - Crank Regrind + Rebore + New Rings + Big End + Little End Bearing Shells + Thrust Washer Set + Valve Guide Set + Regrind, new oil seals + new Water Pump. Again, only circa 5, 000-6, 000 miles since rebuild. Later the Gearbox and Clutch were both replaced circa 2, 500 miles ago, so slick positive gear changes (no crunchy gear changes due to a worn synchromesh).

• New Steering Rack, new Track Rod Ends, new top arm + bottom arm + tie bar bushes, reconditioned front Brake Calipers + new front Discs + new Brake & Clutch Master Cylinders, new front & rear Copper Brake Lines throughout + new front & rear Brake Hoses.

• Various additional items – recent new Radiator + full set of Cooling Hoses, new Fuel Tank, Fuel Pump and Fuel Lines, new Coil, reconditioned Alternator & Starter, new Heater Valve & Hoses, new Boot seal, Electric Screenwash Pump, new 3-piece handle & lock set, Ignition + Service parts etc. etc. etc.

• Refurbished 5J x 13” Rostyle Wheels (x5) are fitted with now 1, 500 mile old 145/ 80x13 75T Michelin Energy Radial Tyres (x4), all with about 6mm of tread (6mm tread Pirelli P2500 Radial on the spare wheel). A recent 2-Box correct period Stainless Steel exhaust system has recently been fitted.

• The Tan Interior is in excellent condition, newly fitted when the vehicle was restored. All interior panels / door cards etc. have been renewed plus new seat foams and seat covers (see photo), tufted/ edged Tan Carpets plus static seat belts. The Heater works well, directing the cool/ warm/ hot air to either the occupants or windscreen. The Hood (with 3 x Clear Windows) is in very good condition, a Hood Tonneau is included in the sale.

• Many 100’s of Hours of Labour plus many (50+) receipts from Moss, MG Owners Club + Naylor Brothers MG Specialist + Yorkshire MG Centre to name a few !!

Condition of Vehicle : Since rebuild completion the Midget has covered approx. 5, 000-6, 000 dry miles and has always been garaged. So, as you would expect, this Midget is in an excellent structural and cosmetic condition complete with ‘shiny’ paintwork, well sorted with good attention to detail and in excellent usable condition. Of particular note is the condition of the engine bay (see photo).

The Midget sits level and all panel gaps are good and even, neither door drops when opened and both door apertures have (as expected) excellent and even rear edge gaps, plus the underside is in an excellent structural and cosmetic condition. Also the A-Post to Sill areas and Rear Wheel Arches and Bonnet front Lip are in excellent condition.

The MG drives very well, starts easily, no smoke, no overheating, a steady idle and pulls strongly (for a 65 BHP engine), it stops in a straight line without any fuss, discs at the front plus drums at the rear, but no servo assistance. The suspension is in good order with no ‘knocks and rattles’ and the car rides well (although don’t expect the comfort of a modern car !), noise levels are typical of a 1970’s Midget but this simply adds to the ‘Midget Experience’.

All Switches and Gauges work well and read correctly, with the Water Temperature Gauge needle sitting between ‘quarter’ and ‘half’ once the engine has warmed-up and circa 40psi Oil Pressure at 50 MPH in 4th Gear.

Considering the above list of work I envisage minimal short to medium term expenditure.

Both Paper History and ‘Photos’ of the rebuild are available to view and included in the sale, extracts of which are available upon request. This car has been garage stored since the rebuild and MOT’d every year since.

Please remember that you are essentially viewing a 42 year old car.

DVLA V5C present (in my name + address) plus 2 sets of keys.

N. B. It’s important to understand that this car isn’t a ‘concourse / showroom queen’, it has the odd mark here and there but is simply a very well restored, well cared for and immensely usable Midget, ready to be immediately enjoyed with minimal expenditure envisaged for many years to come. The car is excellent but not in concourse condition, otherwise I would be asking another £1, 500 - £2, 000 plus I'm not in a rush to sell and I'm looking for offers very close to the asking price only.

A car of this age and type will require ongoing TLC, however Midgets are so simple in terms of design and build that even the amateur home mechanic can tackle most jobs (together with a Haynes Manual) at reasonable cost plus there is a very comprehensive network of MG Parts available at reasonable prices.

Higher resolution photos highlighting the above description available upon request.

If you choose to view this car you will NOT be disappointed. I certainly was not. This car will definitely sell itself as there are many Midgets for sale but only a few in this condition.

Great entry level budget classic motoring !!! Priced to reflect a quick sale this Winter.

Any Questions ? Call me (Steve) on the details below - Please leave a message if I don't answer !!
