Built from the early 1900’s the Morgan V Twin 3 wheeler originally utilised motor cycle engines for their cars which classed them as a motor cycle for tax purposes. As 3 wheeler sales dwindled in the 1930’s the F Types were produced with two or four seats, a more modern pressed steel chassis and a 4 cylinder engine was hidden for the first time beneath a proper bonnet and behind a conventional radiator. Originally a Ford 933cc sidevalve engine, this was later improved to a more powerful Ford 1,172cc unit. Following the war, the 3 wheelers remained available until 1952, selling alongside the Series 1 4-4 models.
Our car is very special. Originally registered in the UK in November 1936 on registration EML677 this car has been built to fast road or competition use by well known enthusiast and Morgan racer Charles Pilbeam. Retaining its original chassis and gearbox, the car was built from the ground up with new aluminium body panels fitted to a new wooden body framework. The engine is the later 1,172cc Ford unit fitted with twin inch and a quarter SU carbs and a custom 4 branch exhaust manifold. Electrics are all new with a modern alternator, turn indicators and an electric cooling fan. The car retains its 3 speed gearbox with reverse gear but the front brakes were converted to hydraulic. For competition use, there are racing harniess’s, additional instrument gauges, a fire extinguisher and power cut off.
Upon completion, the car was sold and exported to America where, according to the Sportscar Vintage Racing Association, it was raced in 2010 and has since had a pampered life as part of a collection of similar Morgans with competition history. We recently re patronised the car following its Transatlantic holiday to within 20 miles of its departure point!
There is a nice file of documentation with the car including details and photographs of when Mr Pilbeam built the car and also the correspondence when Mr Pilbeam sold the car to America with the shipping information. There is also the buff early registration document and later DVLA registration document and MOT prior to shipping along with the SVRA racing logbook and further correspondence whilst in America.
To summarise, this Morgan is over 80 years old and cannot fail to impress all who set eyes on it. It is fully sorted and ready to use, either on road or track, and offered at a price that you wouldn’t be able to build one for, even if you were able to find a suitable donor vehicle.
