The GT version of the MGB was produced from 1965 until 1980. The body was styled in part by Pininfarina, no doubt as a result of the saloon car work they had carried out for BMC. The styling was very attractive and the addition of a small back seat and hatchback rear end made it surprisingly practical and a useful upward extension to the MG range. A little known fact is that the GT has a slightly higher top speed than the roadster because of better aerodynamics.
This car is a 1971 MGB GT in Blaze with a black interior. It a rare automatic version and is fitted with hydraulic power steering and an “Ivor Searle” 2000cc engine and a “Webasto” roof – a specification which probably makes it unique. It is also has an electronic distributor and stainless exhaust.
The underside and upper body are in excellent condition and although it has never had a complete restoration, in 2008 it was treated to a bare shell re-paint by renown body-shop “Marksdanes” who described the body as being in remarkable original condition but with faded paintwork before they started work. As you would expect it drives beautifully – just as well as it looks and the extra torque and power from the 2000cc unit works well with the automatic gearbox.
There is a substantial history file containing various old MOT’s, new and old V5’s and invoices (over £10k in the last few years) on upgrades, replacement parts and servicing. The engine replacement alone cost over £3k and the car has covered just 8,000 miles since it was fitted. The mileage reading is just 88,000 miles and the first owner had the car from new until 2003 whwn the mileage was just over 70k.
Ready to use with MOT until May 2018 (12 months if required).
