Firstly I'd like to say I absolutely adore this car; out of all the W201 190's that have passed through my hands over the years, it's this one that has been probably the most pleasurable to own; it's such an endearing, additive and relaxing car to drive, and is incredibly economical too, I've certainly not been in a hurry to sell it, as I love having it around.
Originally supplied by Mercedes dealership in Hanover, Germany to a British lady who was at the time working there, it was specifically ordered with an MPH speedometer, as she planned to later bring the car to the UK, which she subsequently did a year later, to her home West Sussex. It was then sold in 2005 to the Motoring journalist and TV presenter Quentin Willson. He kept it at his property in South Western France for almost seven years; before selling it to me in November 2015.
The condition is both truly immaculate, and more incredibly virtually all totally original. The car has quite clearly been garaged much of its life, and has also spent a vast proportion of its time in the much milder climate of SW France, which has paid dividends. As far as I can see, it's had very little, if any paintwork, and still shines like the proverbial new pin. Interior is also equally as immaculate and it still even has that "new" Mercedes smell about it. As tends to be the way the with 190D's, specification is best described as "adequate" with very little to go wrong. There's everything you need, and nothing you don't, which is a theme reflected throughout this car.
Mechanically, the car has been serviced beyond what is reasonably required, and mostly by Mercedes Main dealerships and specialist too at that too. The all important oil changes have been carried out much more than required. As such this 190D wants for absolutely nothing at all.
The vehicles comes with an extremely extensive service history, which in itself is something to behold, with 20+ entries in the service booklet, which is accompanied by a large A4 ring binder full of invoices for work and servicing carried out, and also includes every single old UK MOT/ French CT certificate to further verify the low mileage.
As you would quite rightly expect of a low mileage 190D that's been cosseted to this degree, the drive is almost like it was when it left the dealership almost 28 years ago. As I've mentioned, it's also incredibly good on fuel too, and 45-50mpg is easily achievable. Although performance is leisurely in comparison to more modern diesel vehicles, I do have to say that this particular 190D is one of the liveliest 2.0 diesels I've driven, and isn't far off the pace of the larger engined 190D 2.5. As with any Mercedes, the car will also happily cruise at 85mph all day long, with that nonchalant ease only Mercedes owners will truly understand.
This is also a "proper old school" diesel, and the engine used in the 190D is one of Mercedes' legendary OM6** series of engines (OM601 in this case) and as such there's with very little to go wrong; it's a fair assumption that it will still be running perfectly, when all those modern diesels have died their almost inevitable "electronic deaths".
Good W201 190's in general are becoming ever difficult to find, especially since interest in the model range has been recently bolstered recently by what is being written in the press, extolling their virtue as probably the best engineered vehicle ever made; that's some accolade, but one that is entirely deserved in my opinion; I certainly can't think of a more "complete" car. As such finding a low mileage diesel with service history and in this type of condition is becoming a virtually impossible task these days, and it's getting to the point of late that when exceptional cars like this leave my tenure, I'm often left wondering where the next one will come from. I've loved having this car, and I've held on to it for over two years now, only using it on dry roads and in the summer. There's something so endearing about it, which I just can't put my finger on, but as everyone says whose owned an older Mercedes diesel, these cars are just so incredibly additive!. I'm really going to miss her, when she goes to the next owner.
So, if you're looking for one of these, I really don't think there's many, if any, better examples currently on offer. The fact that its left hand drive doesn't bother me one iota, and it's easy to drive on our roads, as the w201 isn't a big car, plus its also a bit of a novelty too!. However I do strongly expect this car will probably go back to the continent, either to a collector, or possibly to be used as a "holiday home" car.
THE MTSV DIFFERENCE
Unlike some, I don’t just simply go out, buy any old car, give it a good clean, then advertise it for more than the purchase price, disregarding any issues the car may have in the hope the new buyer won’t notice…I just couldn’t do that. The cars I source are carefully selected and I work very hard so that when my cars leave me, I have the satisfaction of knowing they are as good as they possibly can be within the constraints I have. As such I have many repeat customers and new customers that have been recommended via word of mouth…the ultimate accolade for anyone in business. To read more, see my website at - details above
