The Land Rover ‘One Ten’ was launched in 1983, and the ‘Ninety’ was launched shortly afterwards in 1984. In 1990, to avoid confusion with the then new ‘Discovery’, the two utility models were renamed ‘Defender’ with ‘110’ and ‘90’ designations respectively which carried on until the end of production in 2016. In 1994, the ‘bullet proof’ 300Tdi was introduced replacing the slightly agricultural, but equally reliable 200Tdi until the all new Td5 came along in 1998.
This particular 110 is a Hard Top ‘van’ model finished in the fleet vehicle favourite; Chawton White. This is a truly useful vehicle in this format; however with the additional side windows, extra bench seating could easily be fitted in the rear to accommodate up to eight additional workers, friends or family. Conversely, it could be turned into an excellent expedition vehicle.
Hand-picked by us, this original One Ten was used to transport a ‘core sampling’ drilling rig in the first part of its life (hence the PTO driven pump and hand throttle); driving from point A to point B, so for a working vehicle it has done very little work for its age, which is reflected in its condition and mileage. The hydraulic pump has been left in place in case the next owner wishes to fit a winch, or any other hydraulically driven equipment. The previous owners (who owned it for 10 years) carried out a cambelt and auxiliary belt change recently.
With the vehicle having low mileage, it drives nice and tight, and the engine fires up willingly as well as pulling strongly on the road. The gearbox, high and low gears, difflock and clutch all work perfectly, and the brakes work well bringing it up to a stop nice and straight. The original specification 7.50 Goodyear tyres all have plenty of tread and are in good condition. The spare, which is presently mounted on the rear is of Avon brand, and is in equally good condition. This could be mounted at the front using the bonnet wheel bracket if you so wished.
Underneath, the chassis is completely solid and has had zero welding carried out, and appears to have been undersealed at some point. Further undersealing would help preserve its condition longer, we have left it ‘bare’ to allow you to inspect the condition. The bulkhead and footwells are very good, the only signs of corrosion is some minor bubbling on the top corner of the driver’s side of the bulkhead, which is currently only a cosmetic issue. There is also a bit on the body capping to the left of the rear door, again a cosmetic issue. The body work is good, only having the odd small age-related mark, chip and ‘dink’ here and there.
The interior is good, with the original rubber sound deadening, plus some new front and rear floor mats. Everything works as it should, including the radio/CD and heater. Behind the front doors are some additional enclosed stowage lockers, useful for carrying small cans of fuel, tools or equipment that you may wish to keep separate from the cabin.
The vehicle holds a clean MoT, valid until 11th December 2018. The odometer reads 83,272 miles, which we believe to be correct from the vehicle’s history/documentation. Complementing the vehicle two sets of keys and various old MoTs and receipts. The ‘private’ registration number on the vehicle IS included. The original jack, handles and wheel brace are complete and stowed in the vehicle.
