J7PY20 Variant – Bétaillère, Heuliez conversion.
This offers the maximum head height and width available in a period conversion, includes over cab storage area.
Clean cab area, good seats - no rips.
Still in use locally on public roads to haul hay and straw from merchants to home by last owner.
And then used to deposit said hay/straw to field entrances.
(Even though the CT (MOT) ran out in late August... (well, it is rural france)
It was replaced by a 4x4 and trailer.

Bétaillère's are favored for their increased rear load area height, so suit a variety of applications.
Unfortunately the compromise you make for this additional space (originally designed to transport animals) is that it has indeed been used to carry animals!
One expects certain wear due to the nature of its original use, so their condition, and use, versus say a factory camper of the same age is very very different.
We view unrestored original condition horsebox's with a different eye to that of a standard van or camper, but still walk away from a-lot of Bétaillère's as they are often 'far too far gone' to be viable for restoration where commercial use is the end goal.
This is a good proposition to take forward as it offers the largest amount of space available in terms of height and width that you can find for a J7.

Structurally Stable Original Floor
(Practically unheard of - although we have had a few in the past)
Chassis rails, and nearly all outriggers in good condition.
Checker plate supports added internally around the entire rear load area perimeter to add strength, this was also equipped with heavy rubber horse mat (which we removed) and underneath is wooden boarding - which has definitely bore the brunt of any use.
We have scrutinized the underneath with a steam cleaner
Underside has had a treatment in the distant past, evident from the flaking paint that was blasted off.
Areas of surface rust - perforating in some exposed areas of the bodywork.
Outriggers close to wheel-arch areas require attention.
It is structurally stable, with wear visible where you would want to see it - based on it being a working vehicle.
Above average for a livestock carrier that hasn't been tinkered with.
Nothing is hidden under layers of caked on waxoyl
No earlier bad 'restoration' attempts.
This has not seen any filler.
Various lifetime marks to the outside of the cab - roof line starting to show its age.
(After scrutiny with pressure washer) - Patching required top right (passenger) side of cab.
Area around rear loading door hinges showing age, as well as both rear corners. - thankfully this is a flat sheet metal fix rather than a complicated extrusion or expensive panel etc.
This has had seat belts fitted at some stage of its life - the anchor points should be renewed to modern spec.

HY’s/J7’s ‘clock out’ at 100,000km (approx 60k miles) as they only have 5 digit readings, they return to 0 and start over.
They are easy to clock – you don’t know what’s happened in the past.
Beware of people including ‘trade’ misrepresenting a vehicle's condition, mileage, and location – and they shouldn’t be trying to sell it if it’s not their stock or have no real consignment contract.
HMRC use their own FX rate in regard to NOVA, this changes (sometimes fortnightly) you will not know the true cost of a van based abroad in £/Stirling until the day it has crossed borders.
