MINERVA MODÈLE S 26 HP LANDAULETTE DÉCOUVERTE 1910

•Restauration ancienne
•Bon dossier historique

1910 Minerva Model S 26HP Open Drive Landaulette
Chassis No. 9185
Engine No. 9192

•High quality mid-range formal Minerva
•Older restoration
•Good history file
•In collection ownership since 1999

Once production of sleeve valve cars became the mainstay of Minerva production, from 1910 they would focus on a tri-model range of four cylinder 16, 26 and 38 horsepower cars, generally changing Model designations on an annual basis, and occasionally modifying capacity slightly. The 'S' was the middle of the range, with a 102x125mm twin-bloc engine of 4, 084cc. The aesthetic of the large shouldered radiator and Goddess motif remained consistent throughout of course.

Jacques Vander Stappen's Model S Minerva typifies the qualities that he prized most in his cars of originality and provenance. On file is documentation that stretches back to delivery in France as new, as recorded on the original driving permit accompanying the car. From this it would seem that its original owner was a Monsieur Georges Latour, with whom it is registered from at least January 1911 until May 1917, in Nice, then under the Marseille/ Alpes Maritimes registration authority under the license number '996-M5'. Its next owner was an Andre Wilmart also of Marseille.

After this the car returned to its homeland and into Belgian ownership in October 1918 according to subsequent Belgian registration papers. Its custody would change infrequently, in March 1958, and in 1963 to Fernand Tiquet, it arrived in this collection in September 1999. To judge from its condition it will have received refurbishment at some point as neither the paint nor interior appear to be 100 years old, but each were renewed to a good standard and have now mellowed consistently in condition. As to its mechanical condition, we are unaware of how recently it was exercised and so recommissioning would probably best be advised.

Today, reviewing the Model S, its coachwork is very well crafted but does not carry any coachbuilder
plates and so is possibly an example of factory bodywork which the company was known to make available even this early. Whether Minerva or another, it is well proportioned and exquisitely made, with angled windscreen, small canopy of protection for the exposed driving compartment and nicely appointed rear compartment. The latter is trimmed in cloth and carries swing mounting occasional seats to each side. As with many cars of this formal style, passenger carrying is its primary purpose and so despite its size the capacity for storage is reserved to a rack on its roof, where presently a large round suitcase rests.

Beyond its attractive brass radiator with additional 'Sans Soupapes' script, brass accessories include period Rubis self-generating headlamps, a coiled bulb horn and klaxon and sidelights mounted to the main cabin. Enamel Royal Automobile Club of Vervietois and Automobile Club de Belgique badges are affixed to the front of its scuttle as well as a curious brass cylinder with domed top badged as a 'Hell Blower' which it would appear was a period fire extinguisher of some sort!

One of the most attractive examples in this collection, its versatile coachwork should make it a good tour car and it would surely be appreciated on events run by the Veteran Car or Teuf-Teuf Clubs. A
