Well, here it is, the ďUnicornĒ of BMW RSís as itís been referred to........ the fabled SRS.
I guess if youíre reading this, youíre probably aware of these bikes, if not, please let me fill in a little detail. It appears that In the late 1970ís, the Australian police force commissioned a batch of 200 R100 RSís, and rather than the full RS fairing, they were fitted with the S style cockpit fairing. At point of despatch, the order was cancelled, and BMW were left with a batch of white RSís.
Somewhere along the line, this one either never had the S fairing fitted, or subsequently had a full fairing fitted. Like the myths and legends around the original bike, after 40 years, i guess weíll never know. What we do know, is that this is 100% a genuine SRS. The engine number matches the original BMW VIN plate, and most importantly we have the additional Australian compliance VIN plate, also carrying the matching number. This is the same number recorded on the V5 of course. The bike also still carries the very rare, white impregnated, factory panniers.
The bike had an engine out restoration around 7 years ago, (photographs on file) and was rebuilt very much as a riders motorcycle. Bearings in headstock, swinging arm and wheels were replaced, along with a full motor refresh, including stainless pushrod tubes, stainless exhaust system, etc. Brakes were also completely overhauled. Infact everything youíd want to do to an Airhead BMW, was done. So mechanically, sheís spot on. Itís off the button, hot or cold, with non of the usual boxer exhaust smoke, charging well, and with all of the idiot lights working. Cosmetically, other than poor paint on the fairing lowers, the bike is still very smart indeed.
All in all, this is an RS for a serious BMW man, and obviously very, very rare to the market. The bike isnít a showroom fresh, newly restored R100 RS, but IS a seriously investable, and practical, BMW, especially at this price. Difficult to know where to price such a rarity, but with the market for Motorsport RSís in the £5k to £8k bracket, R90Sís well over £10k, and a new old stock R100RS @ £20k, this has to be a blue chip investment.
