Austin Healey Sprite Mk1 (Frogeye) is fresh from a full bare metal, nut and bolt restoration with meticulous attention to detail and overall finish that really has to be seen to be appreciated. This beautiful and fun British sports car is supplied with a British Heritage Certificate confirming that it was first registered in November 1958 as an original UK Right Hand Drive car. Prior to purchasing the vehicle for restoration the car had only three previous owners. A two year period of work then ensued to the highest standard befitting these highly sort after cars and it is now ready for its new owner to appreciate and enjoy.
At the start of the restoration the original car body, bonnet and doors where firstly stripped of all components and professionally chemically dipped to remove all existing surface rust, paint and original sealants. Where necessary new panels have been used during the rebuild of the car including full rear outer wings, floor sections including boot floor and chassis leg repair sections, rear heel board section including spring hangers, door skins, front inner wheel arches complete with strengthening webs, A and B post pillars, dash top, inner and outer sill and footwell panels. Any rusted metal in remaining panels has been cut out and new sections fabricated and butt welded in place to provide a true 100% rust free car. Considerable time was spent during assembly of the body on shut lines and panel gaps between doors and bonnet to better than factory original.
The car bodywork has then been painted with 2K Epoxy Primer to provide a rust inhibiting waterproof base paint layer and body panels seam sealed. Numerous coats of 2K High Build primer have been sprayed and then block sanded by hand between application of coats to achieve a true flat imperfection free finish before final application of the final colour. The cherry red paint used is the correct BMC shade of red for this period using a 2K High Gloss paint system and applied both externally to the car body,to the engine bay and the paint colour even extended to the cockpit and inside the trunk area. The complete underside and inside wheel arches of the car have been coated in stonechip protection paint which have also been overpainted in the final cherry red paint to provide a car that looks as good underneath as on top. Many hours were then spent on hand finishing and polishing the external paintwork to a deep glossy mirror shine. For added protection the cavities between bodywork panels have been treated to Dinitrol clear cavity wax injection.
The car has been given a full new black interior with matching red piping to seats. New trim panels to footwells, cockpit and trunk area with the correct molding to the door pockets and correct ribbed rubber to inside of the doors. New carpets and seat coverings. Refurbished original clocks and switch gear are set off with a new period style Mota Lita steering wheel.
Externally the car benefits from rechromed original parts including rear bumpers and wheel hub trims. A new chromed front grille. All new rubber seals and front windscreen glass. A set of original restored and polished side screens with new rubbers and perspex glass. For weather protection the car comes with soft top fitted over a restored original hood frame. In addition there is a stripped and fully refurbished hardtop with new rubbers and painted in matching body colour cherry red.
Mechanically all parts on this car have been stripped and rebuilt including rear axle and the fitment of a superior ribbed case gearbox. The car is now running an overhauled 1098cc engine with unleaded cylinder head whilst retaining the original rebuilt and rejetted twin SU H1 brass top carburetors with new reproduction cooper air filters, new fuel lines throughout and new fuel tank. The engine bay has been carefully detailed including the use of stainless steel nuts and bolts. The original rev counter has been converted (internally) during refurbishment to run electrically as apposed to cable driven of the dynamo. Consequently if required the new owner could up rate the system to run off an alternator. The front main headlights have been changed to halogen bulb units from the original sealed beam units for better night driving whilst looking externally original. All new period cotton braided wiring loom throughout. Original 15 leaf rear springs have been retained which have been stripped and rebuilt. These springs are no longer available but give a better ride to new replacement items available. All new suspension bushes, rubbers, wheel bearings, seals and front kingpins. Car retains the original drum brake system which has been completely rebuilt with all new brake and master cylinders, new brake lines and hoses. Since photographing the car a new set of correct size Firestone tyres have been fitted which also add to the original look of the car. New full system exhaust fitted which provides a lovely period exhaust note. Wherever possible all original parts for the car have been retained stripped down, restored and new replacement parts only purchased where necessary.
An album containing a photographic archive of the restoration will be supplied with the sale. This car is immaculate, runs beautifully and whilst it is both Tax and MOT exempt it will be provided with a 12 month MOT for added peace of mind. This car has been restored with meticulous attention to detail and longevity in mind and is now ready for driving, showing and mostly enjoying.
