The model:
The Jaguar XK8, a luxury grand tourer, was produced by Jaguar from 1996, superceding the XJ-S, and was the first generation of a new XK series. The XK8 was available in coupé or convertible body styles and with the new 4. 0-litre Jaguar AJ-V8 engine. The first-generation XK series shares its Jaguar XJS-derived platform with the Aston Martin DB7, both cars tracing their history back to a Jaguar development study in the mid-1980s known as XJ41/ XJ4. Development began in 1992, with design work starting earlier in late 1991. By October 1992 a design was chosen and later frozen for production in 1993. Prototypes were built from December 1993 after the XK (code name X100) was given formal approval and design patents were filed in June 1994. Development concluded in 1996, with the car being unveiled in March of that year and on sale from October 1996, eventually finishing production in 2005 to be replaced by the new XK.
The history of this car:
This car was first registered to a Mr Starley of Bournemouth on the 25th June 1999 who is named on the original bill of sale for £53, 388. 11. This car has had only 4 owners to date, with the last owner since 2010.
The specification:
This car is presented in Jaguar ‘Meteorite’ silver which is a stunning smokey silver/ gold. The interior features classic ‘Oatmeal’ leather seats and burr walnut wood trim with leather detailing. The car also had factory options of heated front seats, full size spare wheel, cruise control and boot mounted CD multichanger. With all of the optional accessories the bill came to a whopping £53, 388. 11. To put that figure into historical perspective, I bought a 3 bedroom semi detached house two years later in 2001 for £72, 000, so this was a very expensive and highly desirable car when new.
Mileage:
The car has covered 137, 411 miles, an average of roughly 7, 400 miles per year.
Service history:
Fully documented service history with fully stamped service book, plus receipts for extra servicing carried out more often than the manufacturer’s recommendation, as follows:

Current mileage 137, 411, plus masses of receipts for works carried out including:
Full gearbox rebuild and new torque converter at 118, 407 miles from The Gearbox Specialist in Bournemouth at a cost of £2, 248. 80
Leather seat renovation in September 2014
New battery with 5 year warranty in 2016, valid until 2021.
Matching Pirelli P-Zero tyres all round with plenty of tread.
Re-commissioning works recently carried out between December 2017 and Feb 2018 included new rocker cover gasket, thermostat, water pump, new plugs, brake overhaul and a new MOT at a total cost of £1, 437. 98.
As you can see, this car has been cherished and pampered all its life, and a massive amount has been spent to keep it in tip-top mechanical condition.
On the road:
The car drives superbly and feels like a true luxury Grand Tourer. It’s a real joy to drive any journey, long or short. As I have always found with Jaguars, I tend to pop out for pint of milk and end up doing an enjoyable 50 mile round trip. Driving Jaguars from this era is quite an addictive experience! The car starts first time, and ticks over like a Swiss watch. The car has light and responsive steering and excellent braking, whilst the smooth engine and gearbox gives it excellent acceleration and a purposeful road presence. At the time it was light-years better than the competition. These wonderful Jaguars can realistically be used as an everyday car or just as a weekend classic cruiser.
Engine:
This car is fitted with the AJ-V8 engine, a 3996cc 32 valve fuel injected V8 with an impressive 294BHP. The engine runs very sweetly and performs as it should and is effortless for around town driving, whilst this big cat can provide suitable pace and roar when encouraged to do so. When accelerating on a motorway slip-road you are reminded of the potency of this super smooth yet gutsy V8 engine.
Transmission:
The automatic gearbox (completely rebuilt with new torque converter at 118, 407 miles) is very smooth and changes exactly as it should.
MOT:
The car has MOT until December 2018, with only two advisories; both rear brake pads wearing thin. There are no advisories for corrosion, which can afflict these cars and be very costly to remedy.
Accident:
Regrettably, the car suffered a low speed frontal impact when the owner had a slight altercation with the front wall of their bungalow in May 2014. They had just moved to a new home, and unfortunately the owner miscalculated the length of their new driveway. Regrettably these days when you so much as clip a wing mirror, insurance companies do tend to write cars off prematurely, so in 2014 the car was classified as an insurance write off and given Category C status.
The car only required minimal repairs, which were subsequently carried out by a professional repairer, as the owner was keen to keep his pride and joy on the road. There is an itemised receipt for the repair works which were; front nearside headlamp, bumper retainer, bumper support, grille and spoiler, plus labour and paint which came to £2473. 90 on 3rd September 2014 and a subsequent VIC check took place on 8th October 2014.
Condition:
This is a well-kept and much loved car destined to be a future classic. There are a few scuffs and grazes to the front and rear bumpers and a few signs of wear here and there, but if the bumpers were repainted, and a (rather ugly but functional) weld repair to the driver’s side rear sill were improved cosmetically, it would be a very smart looking car. We had quotes for around £450 to carry out all the cosmetic repairs, but will leave that option to the new owner. All in all I think anyone with reasonable expectations will be delighted with this car, which could be enjoyed as it is, or cosmetically improved at the new owners discretion.
Pricing:
The value of these cars can only go up in the future. The rusty old examples are vanishing rapidly and the good ones are becoming scarce. Showroom examples (if you can find one) can often fetch up to £10K so this car could be a great investment. Many predict these cars are going to rise sharply in value over the coming years, as they are now gaining classic car status. This car is priced well below others in comparable condition due to the Category C status, at a very attractive £3, 150. It also has the benefit of full service history and a rebuilt gearbox and new torque converter, which cost over 2/ 3rds of the current asking price!
Conclusion:
This is a superb classic sporting Grand Tourer, with excellent interior, having had plenty of money invested over the years. It draws admiring glances all the time, and is often a topic of conversation with people you meet when you park. It has oodles of charm, character and style. The colour is beautiful and shows off the flowing lines and finesse of the fabulous design. People literally stop in their tracks and look, as these wonderful cars are becoming a less common sight on our roads.
Contact:
This car is being sold on behalf of a friend of mine who inherited the car after the current owner, his father, sadly passed away. He would love to keep the car, but a lack of space, a young family and work commitments mean he does not have the time to enjoy the car as he would like, so it is now being very reluctantly offered for sale.
If you would like to arrange to view the car you are most welcome to call the details below, or email via the links above.
This car is a private sale, so the car is sold as seen with no warranty implied or given.
