1978 British Leyland Princess 1800. Black & Almond For Sale
My exceptionally rare Princess 1800 is being offered for sale to a good home. It was ordered new in what I consider to be the best colour combination of gloss black with Almond interior.
Unusually for an 1800, this car was factory-fitted with power-assisted-steering, which makes all the difference when driving.
The car has lived a charmed life. From new the Princess was used as a wedding car, oddly enough, and then sold to a funeral director and used by the company until 1995 which is when it was purchased by a private owner, garaged for 7 years and then passed on to a classic car enthusiast. The car was used for car shows throughout his ownership and then sold to an enthusiastic owner in Aberdeen, who I purchased it from nearly two years ago. I flew up to Aberdeen and drove the Princess back 600 miles over two days to the South Coast, in superb comfort and 100% reliability. My trip was well documented on a Facebook forum and I loved every minute.
Only 51,000 miles have been covered in 40 years and these have clearly been gentle miles, as mechanically the car is perfect and the interior shows no sign of wear to speak of. The interior is in beautiful condition. The seats, roof-lining, door cards, dashboard and trim appear to have had very little usage indeed. In my ownership the car has been cleaned and polished to perfection.
The car runs and drives superbly, with no misfires or hesitation. It always starts first time and does not burn any oil or use any water. The venerable B-Series 1800 engine pulls really well and, coupled with the 4-speed manual gearbox, doesn't feel any slower than my 2200 automatic Princess, but is far more economical. I believe this engine to be the most reliable engine fitted to the Princess and has plenty of torque, with a nice exhaust note to match. It has been fully serviced recently by a mechanic who is passionate about the BL brand and every inch of the underside has been professionally Waxoyl'd to preserve the excellent condition for another 40 years.
This car will be tax and MoT-exempt in one month's time and my classic car insurance is £64 per year, as part of a multicar policy of 43 classic and modern cars. This makes it the cheapest form of transport possible. The only reason I am selling is due to a reduction of cars due to lack of use. This car deserves to be exercised and used more regularly, as every mile is an absolute pleasure. Any potential buyer will be thrilled with this rare curiosity from the 1970s and the value of these cars will undoubtedly rise as they become more and more scarce. It will come with 1 year's MoT (no advisories last year).
