1981 Jaguar XJ6 Series 3, 4.2 auto, LPG, 109k, full MOT For Sale

I am regrettably selling my 1981 Jaguar XJ6 Series 3 4. 2. The car is HPI clear. This is my daily driver and it behaves spotlessly, however, I am upping my weekly mileage to over 1k miles and I don’t fancy abusing it too much so it will hopefully become someone else's pride and joy; I also need something that the wife feels comfortable driving every now and then. The car has 109, 600 miles which will go up as I am using it every day; these are real miles backed up by its spectacular service history. It comes with 11 months MOT, it sailed through its most recent one and its MOT history is very clean considering it is a 37 year old Jag. Private plate, which spells XJ6SEX is included in the sale; worth quite a bit of money if you want to sell it -original white and yellow plates included-.

In short, this is a 1981 Series 3 with fuel injection and a modern LPG fitted to it –bill available, for around £2k-. I’ve had it for a few months and have done quite a lot of work to it, especially mechanical as I wanted it to be bomb proof to be used as a daily. Between 2009 and 2011 a previous owner restored it, changing pretty much every panel on the car including the seals. For one of these it has very little rust (I’ve own a couple and own a Series 1, XJS and X300). It comes with a massive stack of old bills and service history dating back to the early 90s. Overall it drives great and everything works as it should which is again rare for one of these. The gearbox runs smoothly and has a healthy oil pressure of around 50psi at 3k rpm when warm, and over 25-30psi at idle. Most fluids were changed less than 500 miles ago, including oil (20w50 specific for classic engines), Type F ATF (3 flushes which is a must), power steering fluid and diff oil. I’ve also done a radiator flush, changed most of the water hoses (the ones I didn’t change were fine and will be included in the sale), water pump, thermostat, expansion tank and cooling rack caps and filler neck (these have to be spot on in a Series 3 or the cooling system is not happy), and gaskets. Only last week I did 800 miles in it and it runs spot on at 80-90C regardless of type of driving, has no leaks or hidden nightmares. It is not too bad on fuel, and the LPG system runs amazingly well so you are only using fuel until the coolant reaches around 55-60C, so after a few minutes it automatically swaps to LPG which is half the cost. Being a modern LPG system it runs very well regardless of engine speed (some old systems used to lean at high rpm). The tank is pretty big, probably around 50L but it is nicely hidden in the boot, so you can’t even see it and there is still a lot of boot space left which is great. The filling point is nicely fitted on to the tow bar so the body has not been hacked to install it.

With the introductions over, let’s break its condition down in to the following main areas:

Engine and transmission: It runs very well indeed. It benefits from brand new spark plugs, HT leads, dizzy cap and rotor. New cooling hoses, water pump, thermostat, gaskets, filler caps and filler neck (this has to be perfect or it leaks as the system must work at 15psi of pressure). Radiator flushed about 1k miles ago. All fluids were changed literally early last week for all the right ones. When I serviced it I also checked the compression for peace of mind and all cylinders have a healthy 150psi give or take. As I said this is my daily and I’ve done lots of preventive maintenance to it, I know what old jags are like if you don't give them some love. It also has a new fuel pump (old one was working but whining so I decided to change it) and filter. The auxiliary belts are new too. Being an August 1981 it has a solid flywheel which is a lot more reliable than the post-December 81 flex plates with rivets on it -I bought a spare solid flexplate/ flywheel and torque converter to do the swap if mine wasn't, this will be included-. As you can see in the pictures the engine bay looks busy but that's mainly because of the LPG (extra pipes and wires).

Suspension, steering, brakes, tyres: Everything works as it should. There are bills for discs and pads a few years ago but that translates to 3-4k miles tops. The steering is nice and quiet. All the suspension components (shocks, bushes, engine and transmission mounts, etc) are in good condition and they are not rusty or perished. My next thing on the to do list were the front lower ball joints as these are very inexpensive (quality ones are tops £15 quid per side and they are very easy to change) and I can hear them when going over bumps; there is no play at all in the steering and the car drives amazingly well –drives better than any other classic Jag I have driven, definitely drives the way an old Jag should-. The tyres are in extremely good condition too and they are all matching.

Bodywork: This must be the biggest elephant in the room for any Series 3 that you may have owned or looked at. In this case the bodywork is extremely solid. As I’ve mentioned above it seems to have been restored a few years back (got a few pictures and bills for this). The seals, wings and most panels are rather clean indeed. There are a few bubbles and imperfections here and there which I have tried to reflect on the photos but the car is very solid and looks amazing when wash and waxed. The rear doors have a bit of rust on the inside but it has not gone through and can't be seen from the outside. The chrome arches don’t hide any dramas but I decided not to remove them mainly because I like how they look but also because one of the rust bubbles is spot on behind one of the rear ones, so I decided to leave it alone. Leaving it looking mint would not cost much at all. It does have a few marks due to age but remember this is 37 years old now; I could go around with a touch-up pen but again this is my daily and I don't see the point in trying to hide marks. The bumpers are in very good condition, the chrome has no bumps which is rare and the rubber trim is straight with very few marks. When I bought it the colour was a bit dull but after a couple of polishing sessions it looks nice and shiny. The more I use it, wash it and polish it the more it is coming together. I also love the retro bronze colour (officially called “claret” I believe).

Interior and electrics: Overall very presentable, it is a nice place where to be. The seats are very comfortable and work as they should (they are manual). The main issue that I have found is that because the seats were cloth and old, although there is no wear at all when I put weight on them some of the stitching cracked. My intention was to fit a full leather interior off an xj12, which I have and will be included in the sale. They are clear leather so perfect for spraying in the right colour (biscuit I believe), although I was going to go for tan purely because I like the retro looks of that colour; these have electric bases too. It comes with a Nardi steering wheel which imho suits it but the original 2 spoke leather steering wheel is also included and in very good condition. I fitted a classic looking mp3 radio which does the job and looks good. The aerial is in very good condition but it is now manual, as the motor was seized up (very common thing) and I decided to remove its rotor. All the gauges work as they should and so does all the interior lighting. Again with old jags the electrics can be temperamental but so far so good. The roof liner was probably glued on years ago and it is not saggy, although someone left a raw of pins on it. The wood is very presentable with some of the varnish showing some surface cracks, but it looks good and matches the steering wheel. As far as I can tell everything works as it should –the wiper can be temperamental in the discontinuous/ intermittent "D" position but again I hardly ever use that position anyway; I've tracked this down to the switch which is cheap and very easy to change-.

So in summary the car is very reliable and solid, and it has been an amazing daily for the last few months. Every single day I get positive comments on it and thumbs up on the motorway. I know that every time I turn the key it will start and drive anywhere and it is a pleasure to drive. It is not in show condition but it is extremely solid and tidy, with very little rust and only a few marks in the paint due to age/ use. It needs very little work to be mint but most of the bits that you will need for that (mainly interior) are included in the sale. To be honest I am expecting anyone looking at buying a 37 year old Jag to be ready to work a bit on them regardless of what you read in an adverts. It is extremely good value for money, especially as Series 3 are very quickly going up in price (50th anniversary of the xj6 this year so lots of press coverage) and it is very hard to find one without hidden dramas and tons of rust.

I am based in Nottingham, NG9 area. I think that the description is very comprehensive and I am being as honest as possible; anyone is welcomed to come and see the car, or call/ message me to the details below. As you can probably guess I know my Jags pretty well and would like to think I know what I am selling so please don’t be the usual time waster sending me silly offers or telling me that your cousin who is in the Army would like to buy it from overseas, etc etc. I am very happy to spend time answering questions or showing you the car as long as you have a genuine interest. I can guarantee that the first person to see it will buy it.
