1966 TRIUMPH HERALD 12/50 - RARE, UP-MARKET MODEL, SUPERB! For Sale

HERE we have an absolutely beautiful Triumph Herald 12/ 50 Skylight. And, in case you are not aware of the actual model, let me tell you a little about it. While the Herald 1200 was still in production, the 12/ 50 ran between 1963-67. The "50" was a nod towards the up-rated power as, while the basic Herald 1200 knocked out 39 bhp, the 12/ 50 kicked out a hugely improved 51 bhp. That gave the Herald a massive 30 per cent increase in power.

And that's what we have here. High compression ratio and some other clever tweaks produced the enormous improvement in power - and it makes the 12/ 50 a totally different animal to drive when you compare it with the basic Herald. It was, in essence, a "GT" version of the Triumph Herald.

It's the rare model compared to both the 1200 and the 13/ 60 and you have to drive one to know how much zip they have compared to the 1200. Identifying factors included a webasto sunroof (hence Skylight), disc brakes, 12/ 50 badges and a finely meshed aluminium grille.

Now to this stunning old girl. Here's a few quickfire bullet points first:

* First owners for 30 years.

* Fully restored around 15 years ago.

* engine rebuild three years ago and only around 3, 000 miles since.

* Drives and handles like a new Herald.

* Great, original interior with only a tiny nick on top of driver's seat.

Rarely have I seen such an impressive 12/ 50. The sliding webasto roof opens fully without a hitch and shows no signs of leaks. The body and paint are both excellent save for some inevitable tiny - and I mean tiny -imperfections here and there. Her chassis appears to be in top and very straight order too. She has only just has two small, professional repairs to the rear suspension mounts and they will probably last for the rest of the car's lifetime. She also has a history file which is quite possibly the most comprehensive I have ever come across. It dates all the way back to the car's original purchase by Mr Cox in 1966 for a little over £700. On the road she performs admirably, cruising without effort at 60 mph on the local B roads today. No rattles, bangs or even squeaks. She feels tight and responsive. Perhaps the best Herald I have driven! Although she will not need an MoT after May 20, she comes with a full test!

A "Chasing Classics" article in Classic Car weekly from two years ago, written by Nick Larkin and supplied with the history, states "This is one of the best sorted Heralds we have driven." And goes on to say: "The body was separated from the chassis when the restoration work was undertaken. All work was done to a good standard and the resto has stood the test of time well. The doors are not sagging and we could find no evidence of significant rust anywhere. The recently rebuilt engine appears to be in excellent order."

These 12/ 50s are rarely offered as I would imagine that those who own them probably have no intentions of parting company. It's a smashing car in every respect with an enormous, detailed history. Not to be missed.

I accept all major debit/ credit cards and can also assist with delivery. Please ask for a quote. Thanks, Martin the details below)>
