1936 An historical car with rebuilt engine and chassis For Sale

The first owner of DJJ was Stanley Augustus Holloway, OBE (1 October 1890 – 30 January 1982) who was an English stage and film actor, humourist, singer, poet and monologist. In 1921, he joined a concert party, The Co-Optimists, and his career too off. At first, he was employed chiefly as a singer, but his skills as an actor and reciter of comic monologues were soon recognised. Characters from his monologues such as Sam Small, invented by Holloway, and Albert Ramsbottom, were absorbed into popular British culture. By the 1930s, he was in demand to star in variety, pantomime and musical comedy, including several revues.

Following the outbreak of the Second World War, Holloway made short propaganda films on behalf of the British Film Institute and Pathé News and took character parts in a series of war films including Major Barbara, The Way Ahead, This Happy Breed and The Way to the Stars. After the war, he appeared in the film Brief Encounter and made a series of films for Ealing Studios, including Passport to Pimlico, The Lavender Hill Mob and The Titfield Thunderbolt.

Rolls Royce records show the car was returned to the factory in 1937 and 1938 by Mr Holloway following what must have been a comprehensive ‘breakdown’ (the factory record sheet has that forbidden ‘breakdown’ word on speech marks) as it necessitated examination of cylinders and pistons. The factory records show that engine received a new cylinder block in June 1938, but while the paper records strike out the "N22P" engine designation number, the block still carries N22P.

The car went to California in the 1990s, the export date is not recorded but it was subsequently registered to a Major Piper of the USAF from 1996. When in the USA it underwent interior refurbishment and was painted in a non-RR colour scheme of Plum and Grey with Grey leather interior and fitted with tinted windows to keep out the Californian sun.

Following the car's return to the UK the car was sold by The Real Car Company to Bob Perry of Rolls Royce and Bentley Specialist BENSPORT Restorations.

Unfortunately it was soon evident that the engine was failing and the engine had to be completely rebuilt, including line-boring of new main bearings in 2008/ 9 by Hamlin & Co of Bridgewater. (detailed invoices available) Some proportion of the cost was borne by The Real Car Company.

In 2010 the body was removed, stripped back to the chassis. The chassis, out-riggers etc were then stripped to bare metal and electrostatically powder-coated (black)

BenSports reconstructed the chassis in their RR/ Bentley workshop rebuilding brakes, one-shot lubrication and transmission systems.

Whilst in my ownership I have rebuilt both fuel pumps (SU mechanicals still available), fitted new points and plugs and fitted a new rotor arm. Both original coils are in good working order.

The fuel drain valve (underneath the carb) seemed to be missing or 'fettled' with a valve at the bottom of the connection pipe. I had a new 'cage' made to house the ball-seal in the correct position at the top of the connecting pipe, by Riste Motors (RR specialists) in 2013.

Factory records on file confirm that the majority of the mechanical components are original.

Headlights are original Rolls Royce Lucas R-100 units. Original Swiss made mechanical indicators rebuilt recently. Cleaned and checked and found to have no discernible wear.

Mileage? ... not sure, the odometer reads 73, 000, but it could be more.
