1979 Triumph Spitfire 1500 with overdrive For Sale
Sadly the time has come to sell my lovely 1980 Triumph Spitfire 1500 due to a house purchase.
I had wanted a ‘Spitty’ for many years and looked at many cars with my father before we found a car we were really happy with, most we looked at were affordable but needed attention and I wanted a car that I could enjoy and depend on. I did pay more than I originally intended but have been rewarded with a totally reliable car that is not only a joy to drive but very pleasing to look at.
The car has gone through a very comprehensive restoration by a previous owner and I have a large file showing the various stages. Since then I have made sensible improvements and additions. The car lives with my family of classic and vintage car enthusiasts so has been in good hands. It is the ‘go to’ car for my car mad parents who love driving it.
The body is painted in Inka yellow with a contrasting navy soft top which compliments the bodywork and is very eye catching.
The car has always been garaged and kept under a car cover ever since I have owned it and is only run on dry days mainly in the summer. The previous owner kept the car in his business warehouse and was as enthusiastic about the car as I am. He used the car mainly for an annual holiday in France and covered around 1000 miles a year which is around the same mileage as I have completed. To cope with continental motoring he upgraded the radiator and I have never had any heating issues even in heavy traffic not something you could say about all Spitfires!
The engine has just been re-tuned by a local specialist and is running sweetly. I have had this done every year prior to the summer months which has always been very worthwhile. When I first bought the car I had it set up on a rolling road to ensure that everything was correctly set up which was also a great experience.
The engine bay and chassis have all been sprayed with wax oil as well as the chassis and underneath painted. A 4-branch manifold, stainless steel sports split exhaust and K+N air filters have been added which really look the part and make the car sound as good as it looks. The interior benefits from a walnut dash and smaller triumph spitfire steering wheel. It rides extremely well on poly bushed suspension aided by new tyres and wheels rebalanced.
The only problem I have had with the car was a ‘lazy’ solenoid on the overdrive, I tolerated this for a time but have now replaced it and is working perfectly once again. Rimmer Brothers offer a fantastic spares service with huge stock levels and very affordable prices.
In addition, the car comes with an original factory hardtop roof, whilst complete this does require some attention to the paintwork. Having never used the car in inclement weather I never got around to having this restored.
This a great car and will be sorely missed. Come along and I will take you for a drive you will not be disappointed.
The car has an MOT certificate to July 2019.
