1923 Renault KJ1, unique coachbuilt Oily Rag car For Sale
A very rare opportunity to purchase a probably unique coachbuilt Renault KJ1 light car. This car features a beautifully-made demountable hard top by Carrosserie Bourgeois-Luchard of Paris. The entire roof section unbolts and the car can be easily converted to an open tourer. It has a separate windscreen frame for this purpose.
This car has recently been recommissioned after decades off the road. It was entirely dismantled by its last French owner for restoration in the late 1970s, but no further work took place. We sent the car to conservation expert Benjamin Brown, who got it back together and on the road without upsetting any of the irreplaceable patina. Amongst many other things, Ben made a new fabric roof panel for the car, although you would never know. The upper body section has been carefully preserved and is now water-tight and free of creaks and worm. The engine has been totally gone through and it now runs well. The magneto has just been rebuilt by Tony Holder. Fully UK-registered with large history file. Five new Michelin tyres just fitted.
Although it looks like it has just been pulled out of a French barn, the Renault is in fact on the button and in use. Everything works as it should. It has just completed the VSCC’s Light Car rally in Wales without any problems. The interior is entirely original and in very nice condition. This is not a concours car – it is an Oily Rag survivor and although it has been recommissioned, it has never been restored, so please do not expect it to look brand new.
The Renault is a straightforward Vintage car to drive. The three-speed gearbox is easy to get the hang of and it will barrel along at 35mph quite happily. Pedal position is conventional, and it is left hand drive. It has a dynastart and starts instantly, so no starting on the handle required. Mechanically everything seems to be in order but please bear in mind this is a 90-year old vehicle.
