1981 Mk1 Golf Tarmac Rally / Sprint / Hill climb For Sale

1981 Mk1 Golf 1600, which was prepared for use on tarmac special stage rallies and sprint / hill climbs. The car was first registered in 1981 and could qualify for the Post Historic rally car class. (As far as I am aware, in 3 years’ time at the age of 40, it will be classed as a Historic (classic) vehicle and will be MOT and Tax exempt according to the GOV. uk web site.) It has an RAC MSA Competition Car Log book (Single Stage Rally).

The car was fully road legal but MOT has expired and has been kept garaged in SORN for the last 13 years. I have owned this car from 1988, converting it between 1995 2000. It only completed in 4 stage rallies, 3 sprints and a few GTI track days at Kames (Scotland). The car was competitive in the 8v up to 1600cc class for the Scottish Tarmac Championship and 100% reliable in these events. Lots of photos available and all receipts for the (then) new components.

Specification is as follows:

Engine:
Fully refurbished / rebuilt 1. 595 litre block, baffled sump, 8v GTI gas flowed head converted to run a pair of Weber 40 carbs matched to TSR modified inlet manifold with oversized (35mm) exhaust valves, solid lifters (Ford Cosworth). TSR 103 Camshaft specked for drive-ability over top end power, Vernier Camshaft pulley, Lightened and balanced flywheel. TSR 4-1 exhaust manifold with Ashley exhaust system. Heavy duty engine mounts. On the dyno it managed 156Bhp at 6500 rpm with good torque from 3500rpm. (The car only weighs 840Kg.)

Transmission:
VW Motorsport close ratio synchro gearbox, 6 speed (VW 5speed + Boss 6th) and Quaife ATB Helical LSD, allowing a top speed of 104 mph, on current set up with 14” wheels. Quick shift Gear linkage, fully rose jointed. Mk2 Sachs 16v clutch (210mm), refurbished hubs with new bearings and wheel studs. (Spare VW 020 Gti box with Quaife LSD and Sachs competition clutch)

Brakes & Suspension:
Internal adjustable brake Bias lever.
Front: Black Diamond grooved and cross drilled 256mm x 31. 8mm vented discs with Wilwood GNII 4 pot calipers, using Hawk HB102. 800 pads.
Rear: Black Diamond grooved and cross drilled rear disc, fitted with late Golf alloy calipers (cable handbrake).
Quick steering rack on Poly bushes. (not power assist)
LEDA fully adjustable coil over shocks (springs for wet and dry setup). Wishbones and rear beam are fully Poly bushed. Up rated New Speed anti-roll bars front and back all Poly bushed.

Wheels:
Total of 12 wheels and tires. VW Mk2 steel rims J6x14 powder coated white, Michelin TA00, NO1 and N20 moulded slicks 185/ 60 r14.

Body / Chassis:
The shell was stripped of all under seal and stitch welded in critical places. Safety Devices bolt in multi-point cage, additional front and rear triangulation to suspension mounts and extra rear bars welded in. Welded in mounts for seat brackets. OMP alloy Engine bay cross brace and lower front chassis tie bar. The bodywork is solid and straight with no rust but with a few blemishes from its long life, so it is not in 'showroom condition'. Spare wheel well is flattened with Alloy panel for mounting spare. All fuel and brake lines are in Aeroquip style hose and joints. Has twin red top fuel pumps mounted behind driver seat in sealed box. Battery box mounted behind passenger seat. New windscreen during build, with all other windows in polycarbonate plastic (bronze tint). It has a fibreglass bonnet, lightened doors with alloy cards. Lights: 2 Cibie super Oscar and 2 Oscar lamps each with 100w bulbs on detachable aluminium mounts.

Safety / interior:
Extra strong aluminium sump guard and GRP fuel tank guard. Plumbed in AFFF mechanically operated fire extinguisher system. Cobra fibreglass bucket seats. Willans 6-point harness’s. OMP steering wheel on extended boss. OMP intercom, Avanti map light, helmet hammock etc. Re-positioned fuse box and modified dash to include oil pressure and temp gauges with a warning light. Ignition switch and push button start. Navigators foot rest and button for twin air horns. Net map pocket.

This car is great fun to drive with an outstanding performance due to its power to weight ratio and slick gear change and powerful brakes.
