1978 Super Beetle Karmann Cabriolet Champagne 2nd Edition For Sale
The “Super Beetle” was introduced in 1971 creating a much safer, practical and better handling Beetle. Its main feature was the new MacPherson strut front suspension which greatly transformed the Beetle’s handling characteristics. This suspension also allowed for almost double the amount of front luggage space and allowed the vehicle to be much more controlled in the event of an emergency manoeuvre.
The Karmann Cabriolet was always the most luxurious and most expensive Beetle in the range with many amenities coming as standard. Introduced in 1949, it ran alongside the normal Beetle until 1979 when production stopped.
The Champagne 2nd Edition was introduced for the US-market with each dealership receiving only two cars each. Half of them were metallic blue and the other half were metallic red; each car had a light beige hood with white leatherette interior and a fuel-injected version of VW’s 1600 Flat-Four engine. Special features included the 4.5 inch sports steel wheels, AM/FM radio, Quartz centre clock, padded deluxe steering wheel and rosewood-grain instrument panel trim.
Our “Super” Beetle Karmann Cabriolet was built during the penultimate year of Cabriolet production (1978). An original US-market car, it is also one of only 1,100 Champagne 2nd Editions made. Owned and restored by our sister company over the last 3 years, it is presented in very good condition and is now one of very few Super Karmann Cabriolets available on the UK-market.
The car resided in Jersey Shore, Pennsylvania for the majority of its life until mid-2015 when it was bought and imported to the UK. Found in a relatively sorry state, the Director of London Morgan Turkey purchased the car from the UK and brought it to his classic car specialist in Turkey where it would undergo gradual restoration for the next 2 years. The restoration is fully documented with photographs of the process.
Today this Karmann Cabriolet is therefore presented in excellent condition, after having only completed 300 miles since restoration. The rare metallic red paint shows no sign of use or wear as expected, nor does the white leatherette interior which has been fully retrimmed. The beige vinyl hood has no major creasing or any tears, and it operates with ease of use to transform the driving experience of the Beetle. Originality was not lost during the restoration either, as the majority of the parts are original items and very hard to come by on a model of this rarity.
We have had our Volkswagen Service and Repair Centre perform a full inspection on our Karmann Cabriolet to ensure the car is mechanically perfect. This is reflected in the way the car drives, the original fuel injected 1600 engine revs smoothly and the 4-speed gearbox is a delight to use. The steering feels precise while the suspension makes no unwanted noises, even over the cobbles of our Mews.
The Beetle is currently undergoing full UK registration and will be supplied with an age-related plate as well as a full MOT. This is a rare opportunity to purchase one of the last top of the range, Karmann Cabriolet Beetles, a surefire investment in one of the most desirable Volkswagens to date.
