1969 Mercedes Benz 280SL For Sale

Following the outbreak of the first World War in 1914, Europe’s car industry was decimated. In Germany both Daimler and Benz went back to producing cars post war, however, times were tough. A merger between Daimler and Benz would ensure that both companies survived and following a technical co-operation agreement in 1924, the companies formally merged on the 1st July 1926. Mercedes Benz was born!

Subsequently, Mercedes Benz went on to build some of the greatest cars of all time. The cars from Stuttgart bearing the three pointed star all had one thing in common . . . they were renowned for their technical innovation, build quality, luxury and performance.

In the 1950’s Mercedes Benz produced one of the greatest cars of all time – the iconic 300SL Gullwing and 300SL Roadster. Whilst fabulous cars, they were very expensive and generally sold to the rich and famous. Mercedes wanted to build a sporting luxury car that still looked classical in the mould of the 300SL, but it had to be affordable and the plan was to build such a car in far greater numbers than the exclusive 300SL’s. Enter the Type W121 or 190SL as it became known in the mid 1950’s. This model was an outstanding success and circa 25, 000 cars were built over the next 8 years of production. The formula worked and Mercedes Benz carried it on with great success in the 1960’s with the Type W113 230SL/ 250SL/ 280SL models. This evolved into the Type R107/ C107 280SL(C)/ 350SL(C)/ 380SL(C)/ 450SL(C) models built throughout the 1970’s and 1980’s.

In recent years the demand for these cars has skyrocketed and the Type W113 models have become highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts worldwide.

Oldtimer Australia is delighted to offer for sale a 1969 Mercedes Benz 280SL. This car is an Australian delivered, factory right hand drive example that is in wonderful condition. The car has automatic transmission, factory hard top and soft top.

According to the Service Book, the car was delivered on the 13th August 1969 to its first owner. The car’s early history is not known, however, there are service records dating back to 27th June 1985 at which time the odometer was 69, 265 miles. Interestingly there is a Brents Prestige Cars plaque inside the passenger door jam. The car was sold through AO Dutton & Sons Pty Ltd on the 2nd May 1988 to a Mr R Antoniades of North Balwyn (Melbourne), Victoria. There is a comprehensive pre-purchase inspection on file dated 17th December 1993, soon after which the car changed hands. In the mid 2000’s the car found its way to a new owner in Sydney before returning to Melbourne in 2009.

The current owner was looking for some time for ‘the right’ 280SL to join his significant collection and purchased this car in September 2013. This 280SL had clearly been very well cared for throughout its life and presented as a ‘really nice driver’. The decision was made to undertake a restoration of the car, which included miscellaneous mechanical works, new interior, new soft top, new chrome, new rubbers, body and paint. Importantly the body was found to be in excellent condition with very little rust, so the car retains all its original panels. The car also has a modern air conditioning system discretely fitted, which blows ice cold. During the restoration, the decision was made to fit a differential from a 3. 5 Litre V8 engined Benz. This higher geared diff allows the car to cruise the highway with the engine at lower speed.

Finished in its original colour of ‘papyrus white’ this 280SL presents and drives beautifully. The paintwork remains in excellent condition as does the exterior trim, chrome, badges, lenses and glass. Inside the cabin, everything is also in excellent condition. You first notice the steering wheel, which is quite a feature on these cars and then you are then drawn to all of the instruments and controls. The upholstery, carpets and timber work are also ‘just lovely’. You really could be back in a Mercedes Benz show room in August 1969! Under the bonnet everything is very clean and tidy and there is no evidence of any oil leaks. Open the boot and there is a welcoming surprise that this car has fitted luggage finished in matching MB Tex from Laurent Nay, France.

The data card on file confirms the car is fully ‘matching numbers’.
Mercedes Benz connoisseurs will appreciate that this car has its body number stampings on the bonnet, soft top cover, hard top as well as the transmission support and they all match the ID plate on the car. Under the bonnet, the spot welds on the panels from the original construction remain in place as are the ‘notches’ on the front panels adjacent to the headlights. Inside the car, an original Becker radio is a nice touch. The car also has period correct Coco-Mats which were an option in the day.

The car starts easily at the first turn of the key and the engine settles straight into ‘that’ typical Mercedes Benz idle. Select ‘drive’ and you’re away . . . the straight six goes about its business and the car just cruises with that ‘German efficiency’ one would expect of a fully sorted Pagoda. Everything looks to be fully operational and in working order on this car.

The car has an excellent history file with numerous receipts and documentation dating back to 1985. There is also the factory tool kit, jack kit, hard top stand and a car cover.

Highlights:

- An Australian delivered, factory RHD Pagoda.
- Fitted with the desirable automatic transmission.
- Hard top / soft top.
- Fully ‘matching numbers’
- A beautifully restored car that with modern A/ C fitted could easily be used as a daily driver.
- Stunning original colour scheme that is ‘just perfect’ for a Pagoda.

This car comes from a significant collection, owned by a passionate and pedantic enthusiast. Only a change in direction with his collection has resulted in this car being offered for sale.

It would be hard to find a better example and it is realistically priced for a car in this condition.

Listed price AUD $235, 000.
