A brief history of the club

In May, 1990 whilst checking in the entrants for the Lancashire & Cheshire National rally, a comment was made about there being clubs for most marques of Land Rover but not for the Lightweight. (Air portable)

As Ian & Sue Foster had been involved with the Lancs. & Cheshire club for about 7 years it was suggested that along with Tony & Chris Marsden of Peak & Dukeries we set up a club for the Lightweight. `No one will be interested' we said, but duly wrote a letter for publication in LRO asking if any one would be interested in a club. We had 35 replies within days of the magazine going out later that year.

The next step was for a number of us from the North to meet at Tony & Chris's house in Nottingham for a meeting and here it was decided to apply for membership to the Association of Rover Clubs for help and advice. This was duly given and by 1991 the Lightweight Land Rover Club was born.

That year the club attended its first show at Trentham Gardens, sponsored by BF Goodrich. We had a good pitch just over the bridge from the public car park with two then four motors on it. People started to come in glance at the stand then walk by. `Hum' I thought `I wonder' and went over to two of the motors and put the bonnets up. Within minutes there were bottoms sticking out from under the hood and comments like `oh mine leaks there as well,' coming forth.

It was a good weekend and it wasn't till later that we found out it was also the first Billing show that same weekend, although the club has never missed one since then.

The club has slowly grown since then with a membership now of approx. 340 and some of the original members are still with us.

The club has developed into a friendly, family club where every one is welcome whether they own a Lightweight or not and over the last few years as well as attending shows we have been holding our own camping/caravanning weekends.

Tony, Chris, Ian & Sue have been able to take more of a back seat and let fellow members use their talents and enthusiasm to keep the club moving forward.
