The MK1 Ford Escort – The Birth of a Legend

The MK1 Ford Escort was launched in 1968 at the Brussels Motor Show. Initially, it was produced as a replacement for the ageing 105E Anglia, however later it would become a loved classic that the Anglia could only dream of being. During the 7-year life span of the MK1 Escort, production took place all over the world, Australia and New Zealand, Germany and Belgium all had their own respective plants as well as cars being built on home soil in the United Kingdom.

The Mk1 Escort was built on a well-known platform, front-engine, rear-wheel drive. MacPherson struts up front and a solid live axle at the back. Lower spec models had drum-brakes all round, but more performance focussed models featured front disc brakes. Escorts were made for all purposes, 2-door, 4-door, Estate and even a few performance models. The Family car that could do it all.

There were a series of common or garden models, the 1100 and 1300 models were low down in the Escort range but provided families with a reliable car that was cheap to run, buy and insure.

The 1300 GT model, however, was supplied with a 1.3 Litre overhead-valve crossflow engine, it came fitted with additional instrumentation, a tachometer, voltmeter and oil pressure gauge. It was Ford foray into making the Escort appeal to the performance market. To become competitive in Motorsport Ford needed to homologate the Mk1 Escort, so they began development on the Escort Twin Cam it came with a Lotus Manufactured eight-valve twin camshaft cylinder mounted to a 1.5L engine block giving the Twin Cam a rather unusual capacity if 1558cc.

Arguably the most famous of the Twin Cam Mk1 Escorts is that of Alan Mann Racing, it was raced in the British Saloon Car Championship and fitted with a Formula 2 Ford FVC 16 Valve engine. Finished in AMR’s now-iconic Red and Gold livery, the cars featured large bubble arches.

However, the circuit wasn’t the only place Ford were conquering with the Escort. The Mk1 Escort became an incredibly competitive rally car, Ford’s victory at the 1970 London to Mexico World Cup Rally, at the hands of Hannu Mikkola sparked the special edition Escort Mexico.

The Mexico models came fitted with 1600cc crossflow engines and had strengthened body shells inspired by the lessons Ford had learned in competition. 10,352 Mk1 Escort Mexico models were built. In addition to the Mexico, the RS1600 was developed with a Cosworth BDA engine, standing for Belt Drive, A Type. The very first RS1600 was driven off the production line by Graham Hill. The only driver to ever win the 24 Hours of Le Mans, Indianapolis 500 and the Monaco Grand Prix.

Ford later produced an RS2000 model that utilised a 2.0L Pinto engine. The RS2000 also picked up several rally and racing victories and all three models, The RS1600, Mexico and RS2000 were built with what is now referred to as an AVO bodyshell. These strengthened body shells were all manufactured at Ford’s Advanced Vehicle Operations facility located at the Aveley Plant, in Essex.
