The Datsun 240Z, (latterly the 260Z and 280Z) was the first generation of 'Z' two-seat coupés, produced by Nissan in Japan from 1969 to 1978. Its dramatic looks owed a considerable amount to a 1960's styling concept drawn by Count Albrecht Goertz for Datsun, presumably at a time when they were considering ways to break ...

The Datsun 240Z - Japan’s answer to the sports coupe

The Datsun 240Z utilises some pretty key European styling characteristics, that now-iconic long bonnet, have a look at the E-Type, but it wasn’t just Jaguar Datusn were out to beat. They priced the new 240Z within a few hundred pounds of the MGB GT.

None of the above matters however because, despite the inspiration, the Datsun 240Z is very much its own car with its own story. Production started in 1969 and would continue in one form or another until 1974 with the introduction of the 260Z.

The Datsun 240Z was produced for the world but in Japan, it was known as the Fairlady and there were a few special Japan-only models, The Fairlady ZG, released in 1971 was built to Homologate the 240Z for Group 4 Motorsport. It featured an extended fibre-glass nose and acrylic headlamp covers.

As well as the 432 models, which featured an S20 engine destined for the Skyline GT-R, approximately 420 cars were built, 432 stands for 4 valves per cylinder, 3 Mikuni carburettors and 2 camshafts.

General production 240Z models received a 2.4 litre, 6 cylinders, L24 engine that came fitted with Twin ‘SU’ style carburettors.

Datsun’s plucky sports coupe would go on to battle it’s way into Motorsport during its production life with 240Z’s ending up at the hands of Paul Newman, and Rauno Altonen. The later of those two, in 1972 finished 3rd over-all in the 41st Rallye Monte Carlo, baffling spectators and competitors as this traditional rear-wheel-drive car battled its way through the icy, snow-covered stages.

The 240Z really was the car that changed Datsun for the better, it helped to lift a cloud from their brand and change public opinion, it turned them from the company that made reliable, cheap and economical cars to a brand that manufactured real sports cars, that people could use every day.
